R4 clones were made by greedy assholes.
They used to set a "time bomb" in the flashcards, so after a specific date they stopped working.
The idea was that users would then need to buy a new flashcard, so Yey! Profit!

Yeah, AFAIK there were some methods by using a custom kernel (YSMenu) for those cards... but sure that won't happen with the new Improved Time Bomb™. /s
