SwitchNews is an alternative nintendo & scene news source.

Since 90DNS users are unable to recieve any official nintendo news (and none of those are particually interesting anyway) ive made my own little homebrew to fix that. It uses the internal browser of the nintendo switch, sets a few settings and then redirects to my website. The website is powered by VueJS and is basically just a fancy RSS reader. No article is written by myself and i am not hosting any of the images. The website is designed to work well with the switch but can also be browsed by anything else. Let me know if interest for other devices exist.

Currently the sources are: GBATemp, Nintendolife, Gamespot & Kotaku

If you have other sources you want to see there, please let me know. I am still working on fine-tuning some things like how many news should be displayed, some design choises and layouts, other types of content (like a list of current game releases & other types of news). I will keep an eye on this thread and browsing behavior on the site to make it the most appealing it can be.

ToDos:

  • Different layouts to choose from for a more compact site
  • Preventing news from beeing displayed at the top again after a publisher edits an article
  • Finetuning the controler inputs (and not just relying on the switch-browser to do that)
  • Tweaking the sources and how to display them
  • Adding different kinds of data (not just news)
  • Anything else you want to see

Get the homebrew:

PS: This is my first "public" release, be nice :toot:

This is because the news have not yet loaded in.
After some time it eventually got loaded, thanks.

It would be nice to integrate an AdBlock though.

BTW how to replace the systems' News screen with your news.nro?

There are no ads on my site and i cant control the content on other sites, sorry. Use some thing like pihole.
Afaik you cant replace the newsapplet since its part of the nintendo homescreen. i may be able to replace the eshop though.

This is amazing! Congrats on your first release!
Thanks alot :)

Since the homebrew app doesnt require updates (i hope) and since the majority of the work is done on the website, ill post updates from that here too.

  • added settings sidebar:
    • news sources are now switchable
    • amount of article per source editable
    • sorting by newst/oldest article
  • added sources:
    • Atmosphere
    • Libretro

Will there be a way to add regional news and by language ?. Something like in a "location.conf" file

i could either get the system language and browse to a different sub-site or let the user switch language on the site itself.
but for that i would need sources in different languages and i really dont know what good ones are in other languages.

great idea. hope project is still alive because as of now its on maintance ;)
would be great to add an option to launch the app via nintendos "News" button.
keep up good work

this specific project is currently on ice. not many people were using it and i am currently fiddeling with injecting real news into thesystem - no homebrew needed.

But thanks!

Since it already has been raised from the grave.

Any chance to make it so that it read a custom rss list of news sites maybe even subreddits?

Sorry, i wasn't very clear,
are you gonna do it? if so any idea for an ETA?
if not, can you teach me how to do it?
