Hardware Switch tablet with only dock setting up

I sold my iPatched Switch recently and bought a Switch Lite and it's been great but I'm thinking of buying just the regular Switch tablet and a dock for the rare occasions people visit so we can play Smash etc on a big screen....the thing is, can you set up a Switch without joy-cons (I have the Pro controller still)? If not then the "cheap" alternative is gonna cost the same as a used one.

No, you are required to do the first time setup in handheld mode and it forces you to remove the joy-con during setup.
