Hacking Switch SD issue?

So, I'm helping a good friend boot his switch into rcm, and we've run into a small kink.
He's on 5.0.0 and hasn't formated his SD card. The switch wants him to update to 5.1.0 to be able to create the necessary files, BUT CFW isn't working yet.

Any ideas/thoughts?

Format the SD card to FAT32

Just use a program called fat32 format it might take long definitely fixes the problem
