Pretty sure 1.78Ghz is not a safe speed and will probably cause the battery to overheat and fail.
Wrong

Also for anyone complaining about this not being implemented by @mx4w or whatever, setting a single speed like that patch is a hack
Ofc this is a hack
The ideal way to handle it would be a menu in RA
It will be handled just like in Lakka..
or even better a KIP that can control the speed globally.
Not related but we have a mitm service set up. It gonna be released independly.

Aside from that, the original clock speed isn't restored correctly in handheld mode in that patch. What it *should* do is use pcvGetClockRate before the first pcvSetClockRate and restore that value on exit.
Doesn't matter for CPU, its always 1020mhz.

What actually is the top "safe" speed then, before heat-related issues start to crop up? Assuming the user hasn't put arctic silver on the processor.

It will be handled just like in Lakka..

I was attempting something similar a few weeks ago with PPC/apm: performance profiles, but I quickly realized that was the wrong approach to overclocking once pcv support was merged into libnx. The mitm API in libstratosphere REALLY needs documentation, so I kinda get why this is taking a while. Take your time.

Doesn't matter for CPU, its always 1020mhz.

An SDEV unit could be running at 1.224Ghz. I suppose that's irrelevant, though.

Did you already tested it?
Not the overclock, no... But docked and undocked, my temps stay low. I have Arctic Silver 5 on my Switch, and the fan never kicks on to high anymore. It CLEARLY helps with thermals.

To be honest, I'm not sure if redo'ing the thermal paste is needed for an overclock, but it certainly won't hurt because:
  1. The thermal paste on the switch is low-quality and dries out after a year.
  2. The people/machines putting it on are inconsistent or the paste has weird properties that aren't desirable, because 3/4 of my thermal paste was on top of the heatsink, not under it. There was also none in the center and it was crusty around the sides of the copper plate. Aside from that, it was stuck all over the shield, meaning they really did not apply it properly (e.g. center dot, spread)
In my case, I replaced the paste with MX-4 since I wasn't sure if the switch was safe to use a potentially capacitive paste on.

Can the overheating idiot meme die yet? The Switch overclocks the GPU way higher whenever it's docked, and m4's said that overclocking the GPU raises temps by a significant amount while OCing the CPU is almost unnoticeable.

Overclocking a component that produces way more heat is literally the hook of the system.
