According to the outdated OP, it could be either 1.0.0 or 2.1.0. You'd have to sift through this thread or the google doc to get a more accurate estimate (honestly I'd like to go through and summarize it since there are still gaps, and new data coming in all the time, and/or graph the probabilities so it's nicer to see at a glance for each of the 6 series of serials what means what)
To be fair, the OP is not outdated. Everything in it is still valid. It just doesn't need to be updated as frequently as in the beginning since a lot of ranges are already
covered and new data is a lot less frequent. I went over the new replies and added the serials that extend the ranges to the OP.

Nevertheless, since your summary in the OP only includes minimum and maximum values, I've done a complete re-read of all the posts and am working on a frequency chart to give a bit more of a visualisation to the concentration of firmwares across serials.

Example: Firmwares seen in XAW100 series, data points grouped in lots of 50XXXXX

Is there some sort of pattern or specific numbers I should avoid (or go for) when picking out a console at a store? It seems like the serials are just random.
There's a local store here in the UK that has some Switch consoles in stock but I don't want to go there and have a member of staff constantly bring out boxes while I compare them to the list in the OP.
Ideally there would be something I can tell the person like "when you get one from the back, make sure the serial number doesn't have <insert serial> in it".

There are six series, XAW100, XAW400, XAW700, XAJ100, XAJ400, XAJ700. They proceed through their serials at different rates, but I wrote up simplified guide you can use. After the first three numbers (XAW100 for example) check the next three.

For 3.0.0 these serials are perfect:
W100: <200
W400: <020
W700: <050

J100: <100
J400: <180
J700: <140

All you have to do is memorize these six numbers or write them on a piece of paper and that will make it a lot easier to compare serials in a hurry.

Any higher and you'll be pushing your luck. You can still get 3.0.0 above these serials but you're at a higher risk of getting later versions. Find the serial which had the lowest number compared to these numbers.

Example, if you see a XAJ700100 and a XAW700050, get the XAJ700100 because it is further below 140 than the other is below 050

EDIT:
Now that I've analyzed all the values, these are more lenient serials that should get you 3.0.0 without risk:
XAJ100: Even in graphic it's still an undetermined mess. Stick with <100
XAJ400: Should be pretty safe with <190. No 3.0.1 serials reported below that.
XAJ700: <150 seems fine. There's only been one out of place firmware reported, at 152.

XAW100: No out of place firmwares reported below 230.
XAW400: There's a very distinct switch in firmwares at 028, so <027 is safe.
XAW700: If you can find one of these you're lucky. Anything under 080 is great... in fact most of this serial is. It has the highest concentration of 1.0.0 consoles of all the series.

Great. Thanks for clearing that up. I'll now have to think about whether I actually go and buy it now. I currently already have a Switch that's on 3.01 thanks to the Mario Odyssey cart and I've been stuck in two minds about waiting on there for an exploit or getting a 2nd Switch.

If it helps anyone, my Switch (I think) came with 1.0 FW and the serial is XAJ700061.

Just did some database comparing and I noticed a few errors and entries that have been missed. I don't know if it's really that important, but since I'm making graphics, I do have to sift out erroneous data.
In the google spreadsheet, entry 197 has an invalid serial. Even if the serial is correct, it is so far outside the range that it is a practically useless data point. There are a few other data points I omitted because they seemed so out of place it seemed fair to assume they were a refurbish.

Now, the OP:

1.0.0

XAW100006 - XAW100128
XAW700014 - XAW700047
XAJ100022 - XAJ100042
XAJ400007 - XAJ400091
XAJ700012 - XAJ700065

2.1.0
XAW100139 - XAW100140
XAW700049 - XAW700050
XAJ400105 - XAJ400136
XAJ700078 - XAJ700085

2.2.0
XAW100158 - XAW100173
XAJ400105 - XAJ400174
XAJ700091 - XAJ700093

2.3.0
XAW100175 - XAW100214
XAW400012 - XAW400016
XAW700050 - XAW700127
XAJ100086
XAJ400105 - XAJ400155
XAJ700098 - XAJ700132

3.0.0

XAW100154 - XAW100228
XAW400017 - XAW400033
XAW700059 - XAW700079
XAJ100109 - XAJ100133
XAJ400169 - XAJ400191
XAJ700133 - XAJ700153

3.0.1
XAW100218 - XAW100320
XAW400028 - XAW400036
XAJ100121 - XAJ100140
XAJ400210 - XAJ400267
XAJ700150 - XAJ700182

3.0.2
XAW100295 - XAW100420
XAW400081
XAJ10018
XAJ400267 - XAJ400281
XAJ700197 - XAJ700258

4.0.1
XAW100439 - XAW100516
XAW400081 - XAW400088
XAJ1002523

Only had time to do the XAJ data points today, will work on XAW later.

In the 1.0.0 section:
for serial series XAJ400, an unidentified user (listed in the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ40004, which is lower than your listed min value of XAJ400007. Theoretically however, 1.0.0 on all serial series should start at 000
In the 2.1.0 section
for serial series XAJ400, the max value of XAJ400136 I could not source. The only two serials that match are running 2.3.0. The next highest value for 2.1.0 is XAJ400126, submitted by krot (listed in the spreadsheet)
for serial series XAJ700, astra221 (listed on the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ700070, which is lower than your listed min value of XAJ700078.

In the 2.2.0 section:
for serial series XAJ700, Resaec (page 33 of this thread) has submitted XAJ700090, which is lower than your listed min value of XAJ700091

In the 3.0.0 section:
for serial series XAJ100, shakin (listed in the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ100138, which is higher than your listed max value of XAJ100133
for serial series XAJ400, cysin (listed in the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ400161, which is lower than your listed min value of XAJ400169
In the 3.0.1 section:
for serial series XAJ100, tjok3000 (page 18 of this thread) has submitted XAJ100158, which is higher than your listed max value of XAJ100140
for serial series XAJ400, an unidentified user (listed in the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ400197, which is lower than your min value XAJ400210
for serial series XAJ400, Goombi has submitted XAJ400288, (page 38 of this thread) which is higher than your listed max value of XAJ400267
In the 3.0.2 section:
for serial series XAJ100, South Cape and Yanda (page 22 and 21 of this thread) have submitted XAJ100175, which is lower than your sole entry of XAJ10018X (from sthetix, page 27)
for serial series XAJ100, Martin l. (listed in the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ100182, which is more specific/higher than your sole entry of XAJ10018X
for serial series XAJ700, shakin (listed in the spreadsheet) has submitted XAJ700272, which is higher than your listed max value of XAJ700258.

Thanks for correcting my errors. I tried to include the spreadsheet, but after awhile I just focused on the thread as it was easier to know where I had left
of and what entries are new. Would you like to edit the OP? I can put you in the editorial list.

Sure. I just copied the spreadsheet into excel. From there you can probably just compare the local file with the google one every now and then to see what entries are new.

Ok, I added you to the list. You should be able to edit the OP now.

Is either 3.0.2 or 4.0.1.

Trying to get this to work nicely on an excel graph was a fucking nightmare, I needed graphing features it just could not supply. So I decided to put my art skills to work and make a pretty infograph by hand.

Autism presents to you, an image including every single currently recorded non-erronous data point from this thread and the spreadsheet.

I can see in the display case at my local Target one with XAW700094, says that XAW700050 - XAW700127 is 2.3.0
But on the spreadsheet found someone who has XAW700092 that was 3.0.2, is it just a gamble?
