Switch 2 factory firmware spotted in the wild

factory.jpg

After a long period of speculation and waiting, the Switch 2 is finally in the hands of users. After a quick update, those who have the system to hand are able to play a reasonable assortment of updated Switch titles alongside the system's big hitter Mario Kart World. That is, at least if you were sent a system running the proper retail firmware. Earlier today user AJ on the GBAtemp Discord server posted an unfortunate image of a brand new Switch 2. Instead of a new library of games however, all they're able to try out is a short list of tests intended for QA at the factory.

A short list of json files, these tests appear to cover aging, charging the battery, rebooting, and shutting down the system. Though a remarkably interesting thing to have on paper, this mix-up at the factory does unfortunately leave them with a system unable to really do much of anything. On a complete lapse of judgement I have in fact bought the system from them, and will hopefully have something of a follow up to this post next week.

Thanks to AJ for posting about this (and selling it to me!) and I hope their next system is a functional one.

Update:
The user has since refunded me and blocked me on Discord. I assume they got a better offer elsewhere, so we can only hope the person who ends up with it is happy to share details.

I'd guess just some access to firmware code might be possible just not that huge.
You *can* take control of userland, but then nothing else. Kind of how the PS4 scene did it for a while iirc. Can be powerful, but not by itself, can be used to load Homebrew or Unsigned code but only temporarily. Its more of like a step or two on a staircase than anything major atm.

QA checks passed, getting rid of QA checks failed :p

It looks deliberately bare-bones and it's unlikely there's any attack surface, but it looks like someone had more than enough manual labour for the day and butterfingered the unit straight to packaging.

We have one of there everytime a new Nintendo console release. Nintendo would already expect one or two of this will get out eventually so I doubt they wouldn't account for this to happen.

What a coward. I hope they read this and know how much a coward they are.

Eh, no need to be mean. I kinda wish they shot me a message about it, but I do understand if they just had somebody approach them offering over the odds. Initially they were just wanting RRP + shipping. I wouldn't personally have been able to afford more than that anyway.

That shit's really on Nintendo for having zero padding between the screen and the front of the box. I guess two cents of bubble wrap would've eaten into their margins too much.
Who would staple the receipt to the box in the first place? I don't think I've ever seen a retailer do that with electronics. Furniture maybe.
On the other hand, not putting the screen of your handheld as the first thing behind one or two layers of cardboard would also have been pretty smart :D

I think it's another marketing technique so people would talk more about it

Its less about the finding a better deal and more so them thinking that blocking all communication from someone is an appropriate way to end a conversation or transaction. It just screams of immaturity.

They may have gotten an offer from a large company that they could not refuse...
