Interestingly, the Switch 2 Dock uses 24Gbps HDMI 2.1 and NOT the more widely expected HDMI 2.0 for display out. This means two things:

  • A future update could support docked VRR
  • A future update could support 4K120 via DSC
I have not torn down the Dock 2 to see exactly what model HDMI 2.1 chipset is being used, but I just wanted to get this out there ASAP. Personally I hope both of these come as not having VRR in 2025 in any form is completely unacceptable and right now I cannot get my system to output 120Hz at any resolution to my LG CX (1440p is grayed out, 1080p only ever chooses 60Hz regardless of the 120Hz setting, and since 1440p120Hz works on my Xbox so it's not the display).

Your thoughts?

Folks who have torn down the dock have stated that the chipset used is from Realtek, and its markings place it as being practically the same one used in the PS5 Slim for converting from DP to HDMI. That is where the potential of 4k120 vis DSC and VRR comes from. And while the Switch 2 uses 24Gbps via 4 lanes of 6Gbps each, that doesn't necessarily mean it's the limit. DP 1.4a stated to be used in the Switch 2 can go up to 32Gbps, but there may not be any worth to it by that point.

And one more thing.

I have an LG C1, and while the option for 1440p is greyed out in the Settings, the Welcome Tour game does change the display to utilize 120hz mode when it needs to, which shifted it from 4k60+HDR10 to 1440p120+HDR10 during this little demo. It changes back to 4k60+HDR10 when I leave the demo. The note about 120hz in the Settings makes this note:

Outputs video at 120hz (when supported by both TV and software)

So by that, I imagine it is the games that set the stage to use 120hz when opting in rather than the system. Having the 1440p option grey out in the Settings may be because the TV supports 4k. The Home Menu doesn't necessarily need to run at 120hz anyways.

Cool. 32Gbps is a disappointment, but I'll take the extra 8Gbps over what's available today.

It has already been confirmed that Switch 2 can not do 4k & 120fps at the same time. You're expecting to much from mobile hardware.

It doesn't need to natively render at 4K120, nor did I ever expect it to. But there are still benefits to being able to send a 4K120 signal to the display, such as avoiding double upscaling and that some TVs have lower input latency when handling a 4K120 signal.
