Hacking Strange problem with M3DS Real

I was trying out a new M3 DS Real. Seemed to be the real deal - crosschecked with the guide from their homepage.

I loaded up the card with the latest firmware and a couple of ROMS, old and new, but it didn't launch anything! Pressing A or Start in the menu didn't do anything! Also some game sizes were reported wrong.
The only thing that actually managed to start and boot was a homebrew SNES emulator!

What gives?

PS. an older (origin unknown) version of the system software managed to run the ROMS, but the newer titles booted to white screens.
