i feel you, the ps2 had freemcboot, and i feel really sad that the gamecube doesn't have a similair thing...

aside from modchip (there are several types of modchip from what i know, some are for the drive, others for the bios)
there are discs exploits as well.
one method being the sd media launcher or similair disc loaders
the other is exploit trough a game. there is a wide selection of compatible games games, the pokemon collosseum or xd being an example, i think smash bros as well..
you just have to have a hacked save file in your memory card (can use a wii to move the save) and it will boot the thing of your choice for example swiss
sadly, this will have you to use a boot disc every time you turn the console on... and if you want to use burned discs, you will have to swap..

Softmods may not be installed onto, or run from, the system menu.

Hacked saves don't trick the memory card manager into running arbitrary code.
they don't? launching swiss from loader injected in a hacked save, isn't running arbitrary code?

Swiss and an Action Replay disc do just fine for me...

I'm more upset that the Wii U still doesn't have a NAND-restoration feature. There shouldn't be anything holding us back from restoring the NAND, since we have total control over the system.

Bit of a pain to set up though.

If you have a Wind Waker disc, you can just use that and have Swiss launchable from the memory card itself. Again, a bit to setup, but it's much better than the method I'm using with the Action Replay.
like i mentioned earlier, there are a bunch of compatible games (i believe there are more in the forums):

but yeah you can have both the save and swiss in 1 memory card as long as it has room for them (it almost fills my 251 blocks memory card with the pokemon one)
i will still try to get a sd media launcher to make stuff easier, and to don't wear out my official games from swapping :c since it comes with a loader disc and a sdgecko, it is a ready to go solution

You can still go for the first soft-mod on the gc. It works if you have a copy of PSO, a BBA, a crossover cable and a PC or laptop.
The only problem is that it isn't a permanent soft mod.
Or you could buy a modchip for less than 5% of the price for a BBA.
It's not a soft-mod but it's way cheaper than the PSO option.
