I have a 1.6 xbox I plan to softmod, but I also want to replace the hard drive with an ssd. Could I just softmod my xbox, backup the EEPROM with a USB drive and just put the EEPROM on my SSD? That sounds like an easier way than the CHIMP hotswap method.

In the past I did use a PC based software to format, setup the dashboard and and 'lock' the new HDD using a dump of my EEPROM.

However this was a long time ago with an actual IDE drive on an old computer, not sure with SATA SSDs on modern computers.

Personally I'd probably put both methods on the same level in terms of hassle, especially as I'd be paranoid and remove any other storage drives on the PC.

I have a sata to usb adapter I can use. Did you have to resoftmod your new HDD after locking it with the new eeprom?

I don't know if those adapters will work, I've had mixed results for even basic stuff like reporting the drive name and SMART information.

The software I used booted off a CD, although I'd be surprised if a newer option isn't available. I'd still be paranoid and disconnect my good drives and maybe just use a bootable USB.

I did have to re-softmod, but only because I made the mistake of not disabling 'shadow c' when I made my backup of the C drive.

You can use your eeprom.bin and Xboxhdm2.3usb or the trial version of FATXplorer to lock the new drive using a USB adapter. But be aware that not all adapter chipsets are supported.

With these tools you can format and put the softmod files on the new drive.

Looks like after a lot of trial and error I almost have it working now. The xboxs boot screen plays but the screen is black after that. If I open my disc drive then the xbox logo comes up but other than that, cant seem to get it to do anything else. Ive tried opening the disc drive after the boot screen like some recommendations I see in other places but that doesnt do anything other than bring up the xbox logo.

Anyone have any ideas?

Is it a Crucial SSD?

And have you already tried unplugging the disc drive (assuming you have CerBIOS).

Not using CerBIOS but after redoing it, the dashboard only comes up AFTER I press the eject button and my stuck disc drive tries to eject. Not really a big deal since I can actually use my xbox now.
