HL2: DM
HL2: Lost Coast
Portal: First Slice (Demo)
Peggle Extreme

My computer doesn't have an NVidia graphics card so I used my cousins.

Thanks dude, I made an account for my friend who recently got a new laptop with non-nvidia gfx and couldn't afford games

Nvidia owners get the same as ati owners, and more. You don't need HL2 to play Lost Coast. Lost coast is more of a tech demo than a game though. And it requires a pretty good PC to play @ the best settings. Much more than vanilla HL2

Ati owners get
HL2: DM
HL2: Lost Coast
but Portal: First Slice (Demo) is on steam under the free stuff/Demos part of the store which anyone with a steam account can download for free.

All the free games are stand alone and do not require the full version of HL2. Hl2 Death Match is the best one out of the selection (Find a Puzzle server for mad fun) Hl2 lost coast is just a tech demo valve released to show how HDR (High dynamic range) works using the SOURCE game engine and can be completed in 10 minutes not worth downloading unless you are really interested in the technology involved in HDR and the SOURCE game engine.

To use the mods you need need a full version of HL2. As for using a pirated version of hl2 the mods would not work as you would have to connect to non VAC (valve anti cheat) servers as most mods are multiplayer and because not many people use a cracked HL2 to run the mods there is no cracked VAC servers for HL2 mods not like Counter strike:source for example where there is hundreds of cracked servers. As for getting banned i have not heard of anyone being banned from steam as valve makes money from you buying games and promotions on steam so why ban you. That is if they even work out you are using cracked software which they can not unless they put some sort of spyware/monitoring software on you PC which is illegal to do anyway. I own the Orange box and GMOD 10 but i play on a cracked version of Counter strike:source as there is so many crack servers i do not see the point of paying $20 dollars for a real copy.(But i might buy Counter strike:source soon just because you can use the models/textures with GMOD 10 which you can not with a cracked version.)

If you sign up for a Steam account make sure you you join the GBAtemp Steam Commmunity group.

Yep because pirated versions of Portal/CSS/HL2 are decompressed and cracked .GCF (Game Content File) files. GCF is the file system/extension Valve use to distribute games with Steam it is like a ZIP/RAR file that can only be used by the Steam client. When you buy a game on steam you are buying the key to unlock and use the .GCF file. This allows you to play the game with the Steam Client and your Steam User account and all the perks that come with that, The Steam community, Mods, Automatic updates and VAC servers. Once it has been decompressed and cracked it is a different bunch of files/data on your PC/HDD. As it is no longer a .GCF file (because it has been decompressed and cracked) the Steam client does not recognize the game files as .GCF files so the Steam client does not know you are using a decompressed and cracked version of the game files. Most cracked/pirated Valve games have "Non-Steam" used in the description because of this.
