I have never had any problems with hardware compatibility with linux, and speaking as someone who went from using linux to macOS, I found it far easier to install software on linux than on macOS. All you have to do on linux is fire up synaptic and click install on whatever software you want.
hardware compatability isn't the main problem with linux, support is. lolatidrivers. also adobe programs. for the most part, most linux distro's will do what you need in a round about way, but a lot more hassle than is needed. You want to play games? compatibility isn't guaranteed, lots of performance issues and a few work arounds needed for a few games. you want to use photoshop? half the things don't work. You want flash? lol who watches flash in fullscreen anyway?
sure there are freeware alternatives (GIMP, Open office and whatnot) and it is often argued whether they provide the same useability then their counterparts. but in the end of the day, it depends whether you like convenience with an operating system or not.
the same applies to macs with games, and the open office and the GIMP are better than M$ office and photoshop, hell, I was pissed off at how badly the GIMP runs on a mac.
