Hacking SSBB Texture Swaps

I replaced
*Menu>SelCharacter>Char_bust_text
AND
*Menu2>sc_selcharacter_en.pac

with a text file. This text file was COMPLETELY empty. With both files COMPLETELY MISSING, the game loaded up FINE, went to multiplayer FINE, and had ALL the original costumes intact.

These two files are _officially_ useless. They can be completely erased without mal-effect. I've tested this with EVERY character select menu in the game, from multiplayer to single player (even "challenge").

EVERY character selection menu in the entire game must use that one, hidden portrait location. As for the two above? I don't have the faintest clue what the hell they are for if I can just erase them and have the game still function

What about Story Mode portraits?

I went through all the common.pac files yesterday, I can second that those aren't it.

From what I've seen, whenever the game uses a duplicate texture (the three cases of selection screen tex), they are always named that same thing. Like I said, I did a hex search of all 8 gigs of iso for the first textures name and found nothing. Unless my iso was even more corrupt than I thought, it means that they are either compressed, we're missing something, or it's an exception to the rule.

Also, I have about 3/4 of the iso fully extracted with ssbextract/tplx. I found seven instances of the first texture (mario's default color) for the character portraits. The one uncompressed, four where there are no other textures after it (it is the only selection screen portrait there, along with other random textures), and then the two decompressed ones. When hex searching the iso I found the first five, but not the last two since they were compressed. This further backs up my belief that they must be compressed.

Finally, one more suggestion. Clear the cache on the Wii. I can do this by just unplugging mine for 10 seconds or so (a minute or two to be safe), but I don't have my battery in, so it may require something else such as playing some other games for a while. I have had one or two occurances where a change I made didn't show up because the data was already in the Wii's cache. Both these times were before I perfected the hack though and were for things such as the game not crashing when I had a corrupt .pcs file.

To clear the cache I usually just go back to the Brawl menu. To humor the thought I just unplugged my wii for 2 minutes and then tried again with my disk that has those two texture files completely removed, it still shows the default textures. I'm definitely losing hope here ;(

Sonic lacks the mental capacity to become Silver, so I must say you are incorrect.
 
No heart and no soul eh?
I'm guessing it might be a heartless or a nobody from kingdom hearts (that's right, that's all i can think of)
 
oh yeah, considering that menu2 file I'm thinkin' since it's not a normal menu icon for the multiplayer, maybe it's from SSE?
I dunnno just a thought

The ability to change textures is a great start. Now, all we need is models and animations, and Sakurai would never have to do another game.

Er...I can't edit my front post ~_~. Actually, I *can*, but it cuts off a whole bunch of stuff. Anybody know why?

*sigh* I think I have reached a maximum number of lines or something. I *really* want to keep this GBATemp exclusive, I don't want to move it to a dedicated website. If an admin or moderator or something could contact me to confirm that there is a maximum amount of lines, and I've reached it, it would be nice. If there was a way to make it so I could have unlimited lines for that front post it would also be nice =/. And while we are at it, there is no table function on this bbs! Which I would use to condense the post!

Edit: I contacted SinkHead, who is forwarding my concerns to the "resident technician". Hopefully the problem is fixable

Do i need a modchip to do this or can i is this going to be like a hacked save or something you can use without a modchip.

or can you use it with homebrew channel please tell me.

In the future we are hoping the Gecko can load these, or the Ocarina equivalent, though we haven't even begun to look at these things yet. Be assured a post will be made about this subject when we arrive at the appropriate time.

It will have to be in an altered copy of Brawl. Meaning you need a chip, or you could invent an ISO loader.

EDIT: I'm not sure how it could be booted with Ocarina, would be nice if it could.

Edit: I have not heard back from the GBATemp staff, so I am in the process of migrating everything to another website. I really hope someone contacts me soon with a solution to keep it on this website, otherwise I really have little choice
 
Would putting all of the old updates into a spoiler tag do anything? I'm not sure how those work, but it takes away line space I think?

Also, maybe the staff could delete and designate posts #2~#5 to you or something (or if nothing else make a new topic and post 5 times to reserve space, and copy the first page over - while locking the old one?)
 
If anything, the spoiler tag would consume MORE lines.
I don't think there is anything to do with the first post if it's bugging when you click edit, possibly it's at the maximum size possible for the database, something like that.

You could split the post in two, like your first post and the fourth post (also yours).

Just a note: thumbnails are made with a completely separated image, because one of the main intentions is a small file size, not a big image just being shown small.

But I'm loving to watch this daily! Keep up the good (good? awesome/incredible!) work!

Ultimately, I have decided (until GBATemp staff contacts me with a viable alternative) to relocate everything. This thread will still be where I post hints, discuss problems, future developments etc. etc., I just won't be able to have all the images.
