An interesting bit of news hit yesterday. Square Enix filed a trademark for the name "The World Ends With You" in Japan a couple of months ago. This is of course the English name for the hit DS action RPG Square released several years back. It's widely regarded by many to be ones of the best DS games ever made, garnering critical acclaim and high scores almost universally from both mainstream gaming journalists as well as regular gamers. A sequel has been heavily requested since then. An interesting thing to note about this trademark is that in Japan, the game was originally titled "It's a Wonderful World". But when the game was localized for other regions, it was renamed The World Ends With You. However, the trademark filed by Japan today was for its English localized title instead. An interesting little tidbit. It could be that the creators felt the English name was more fitting for the plot.
This could mean any number of things. Perhaps a sequel, or an updated rerelease, or any other sort of thing. But this does seem to indicate there's something planned for it in the near future. This trademark also comes only a few months after it was revealed that characters from The World Ends With You would be appearing as cameos in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. In that game, the protagonists Neku, Shiki, Joshua, Beat, and Rhyme all appear in one of the worlds as alternate reality versions of their selves from The World Ends With You. Tetsuya Nomura, The creator of both Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You, also teased in an interview from September that the characters' appearing in KH3D may signify something happening in the future, saying "something" is being worked on.
So keep your eyes peeled. This could definitely indicate some sort of revival of The World Ends With You in the future. Maybe even soon to be announced. Very exciting tease for fans of the original!
