Sony registers trademark for Sunset Overdrive

capsule_616x353.jpg

In the time since Insomniac Games released Sunset Overdrive for the Xbox One in 2014, a lot of things have changed. Most notable of which being Sony's acquisition of the studio in 2019. While there's no official word on whether or not the game will ever receive a sequel, something Sunset Overdrive-related may be brewing over at Sony, as they've registered a trademark for the name, right at the tail-end of April 2021. While we wait to see what comes of this trademark, you can look forward to Insomniac's latest game, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, due out this June.

How is that relevant? Sony isn't claiming they made Sunset Overdrive, they just bought the developer who did (Insomniac). They probably had to wait for the previous trademark to expire before filing for this one, which will allow a sequel or remaster to be made.

Did you hear the latest about Fox vs. Blizzard over the trademark of the Spanish word "Diablo"?

I find the "ownership" of ideas and words to be a funny subject. Sponsorships, producers, developers and more all get credit for their different roles. I just imagine playing Sunset Overdrive on a PlayStation and seeing the words,"brought to you by Sony" or something similar and it makes me thinks of the meme. Obvious it isn't "theft", which is why I presented it as an oxy-moron.

I think that ownership over a specific title is ok, but when it is either a commonly used phrase or one word I don’t think that should be allowed. A perfect example would be Sky threatening lawsuit over Microsoft and hellogames, Microsoft for trying to name their cloud storage service “sky drive” and hellogames for no mans sky. So theoretically anyone could claim the word “the” and everyone would be bankrupt. Scary shit, even though there are probably laws against it, but concept still applies.

The implications that every idea can be trademarked or copywritten is a dystopian scenario that I think about. Let me know when Nintendo starts suing people for saying the name "Mario" on youtube.

this is one of the only games that made me want an xbone. I probably won't get it for playstation though. after my issues with the ps store, I don't want the same problem to happen to another account much later down the road.

My thoughts exactly. I got it as soon as it launched and I've beat it twice, but... yeah.
