This could all easily be avoided if the PSP2 opts for retail distribution using Flash-memory cards.
No seriously! Your standard PSP UMD was no more than 1gb, or in some cases 2gb. You know how cheap it would be mass-produce games on cartridge media now?
That would be awesome

Regional wise, this is more for Japan which has digital downloads of games that are cheaper than the UMD usually a 500 yen difference, however there was one game that was 1000 yen less with older titles being 1-2k yen cheaper and most classics being 1500 yen or less (usually 600-800 yen), Sony did it right in Japan and also in HK and KR. However in the US and Europe, this hasn't been the case with overpriced digital downloads and lack of titles and the PSP2 will fail outside of Asia. Hopefully I can use my current JP PSN with the PSP2.

I have to admit, seeing the topic title I actually misread it as 'Sony continues to beat its own face in with a turd covered shovel'.

Seriously, I think it's been pretty well established by the truly epic fail that is the PSP Go that consumers aren't interested in download only media. As proven by the sales records at my local Game store. They sell DS' by the truckload, PSP's are just barely hanging in there by the skin of its teeth, the PSP Go....is nowhere to be found. It spent about two weeks on the shelves then mysteriously vanished. If this turns out to be genuine then the PSP as a concept may as well put mistletoe up its crack and kiss its arse goodbye because it will fail in the most hilarious way. Maybe not as badly as say, the Gizmondo or the Virtual Boy, but pretty close I reckon.

If it gets homebrew on it, I might get one for emulators, just like I did with the first PSP. Otherwise, I'm probably skipping it entirely.

Only recently I've been playing on the PSP, and I was really surprised about how incredibly bad UMD is. Not only can you easily scratch them and does the PSP look like it's about to break any time, it's also extremely noisy and probably eats away the battery really fast. If I were to buy a PSP, I wouldn't buy anything for it on UMD. For me it's either cartridges or downloads.

Easy to scratch? Unless you're taking a pencil to the gap in the casing I doubt you could scratch one up easily. They're harder to scratch than DVDs and we don't complain about them. The noise issue is something I notice a bit on my PSP-1000 (which is quite old and probably needs the drive replaced) but its not hideous. The Battery issue would be build into the design of the console (hence the 1800mah battery compared to the original DS's 850mah). Using discs is the cheapest way to get a large amount of storage for games, Sony saw this and did their best to make them as much like cartridges as possible.

I do think the main failure of the Go is more to do with the retailers, they are pushing the PSP 3000 more than the PSP Go because once the Go is sold, that is it for that customer. They won't be returning to the same place to buy more games as Sony have forced gamers to get the game directly from them. They also wont be trading games in or buying used games which seems to be what keeps a lot of places open. Not really sure how much profit they get out of PSN cards but they don't seem to want to push them that much.

If the PSP2 or whatever its called is a all new handheld and its games cannot be played on anything else other than a PSP2 then retailers may stock it more seeing that there isn't any alternative. Thing is, they'll hike the price up and Sony will have to pretty much keep with a high price point to keep them happy.

OOOOOoooooh. I like that line.

Seriously, I don't think the gaming market in general is ready for 'download only'. I know for sure, that I'm not.

Digital only will become popular only when everyone has fast and unlimited bandwith, and there are regular sales like on steam.

It'll be awhile until everyone has fast and unlimited bandwidth. Look at how the ISPs in North America are now. Monthly cap and way too overpriced for the higher internet speeds.

QUOTE(Law @ May 24 2010, 11:02 AM) They could at least sell retail games in stores on locked/encrypted memory sticks :/

Selling memory sticks at game stores is probably the better solution right now.

Sales rep: I'm sorry, but sales of the PSPgo have been disappointing. Looks like we'll need to come up with something else.

SCE CEO: Duh...LET'S MAKE ANOTHER ONE!

Yeah, smooth move if true, Sony...>_>
