During a Sonic the Hedgehog panel at the gaming convention SXSW, SEGA announced that Sonic Mania would be getting delayed from its "Spring 2017" release date, down to sometime in Summer 2017. The delay is due to SEGA and the game's development team wanting more time to "meet quality standards". To compensate for the delay, a new trailer for the game was released, showcasing Flying Battery Zone from Sonic & Knuckles. Sonic Mania will be launching for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

I saw the Green Hill Zone gameplay trailer and it was funny how the player got hit in Act 2. I figure gameplay trailers show the player doing very well, that person did up to that point. I'm still greatly anticipating the game, is there going to be a physical release for Switch?

Got quite a lineup of games to keep me busy till it hits. Was hoping to have it on the switch sooner than later though. Oh well, looks like I'll be playing my action RPGs in the meantime.

Played the demo at the Switch Premiere and that got me hyped up. So, just waiting a couple more months is no big deal.

Fingers crossed SEGA makes a physical release for the platforms it'll be out on, if in case Sonic Mania is digital-only then I'll wait for a price drop than pre-order at launch.

Any source, I found a twitter post by EB Games Australia on feb26 saying this, but feb27 Aaron Webber saying no news on a physical copy? I couldn't find a more recent update. I'm really hoping for a physical copy.

Really feels like the names for Sonic Mania and Sonic 4 are backwards. This clearly should be sonic 4, and that attempt at a 2.5D Sonic should have been Sonic Mania

In all seriousness, though, I'm glad they delayed the game. I think we all know what happens to rushed Sonic games, so I'm glad they spared the extra month or two to get some proper bug-testing in.

I watched the live stream of the whole panel. It was cool, but Project Sonic 2017 being called Sonic Forces garnered way more sexual jokes than I expected, and the gameplay trailer they had was quite short and just looked like Sonic Unleashed, right down to the Rooftop Run level, previous object resources and UI and all.
