Implying Sonic Adventure 2 Battle wasn't the best one.

Because it wasn't? Sonic 2 on the Genesis was the best Sonic game.

everything that comes after 3&Knuckles goes from "not that good" to "shit"

Well, I think of 2D Sonic and 3D Sonic as two different things.
I would consider S3K as the best 2D one.

(And since this seems to matter so much for you guys, no, I had never played S3K as a kid. In fact, the only Sonic game I had played as a kid was Sonic 2.)
