Greetings,

I've been looking into installing custom firmware on a previously unmodified 3DS using the instructions at 3ds.hacks.guide and have a few questions before I begin.

I have the old 3DS which is currently on version 8.1.0-19.
1) Is it recommend that I stay at this version and follow the Soundhax route, or should I update first in order to follow the safecerthax route?

I plan on backing up my cartridges and playing them from the SD card.
2) Can I also make backups of games downloaded from the eshop?

Assuming yes to the previous:
3) Can I make backups of eshop downloaded games currently installed on a second 3DS unit?

Hello and welcome to GBAtemp.

1.
Soundhax is an easy method. Use it whenever possible (≤ 11.3 official firmware) –– and it obviously is possible on your old version.
2. Dumping games is explained on the guide:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/godmode9-usage#dumping-a-game-cartridge ←Cartridge dump
https://3ds.hacks.guide/godmode9-usage#dumping-a-title ←Installed title dump
3. Both the source and target system must have CFW. Install your dumped games with FBI.

If you have any further questions or problems just ask. In most cases you will get friendly help (although typing a friendly and hopefully helpful reply takes a bit more time).

Good luck and have fun!

1) After looking the instructions over and comparing them I didn't think I was well enough informed to know the pros and cons of each route.
I've seen that table. That's how I knew each route was version specific.

1) Thank you. I will go with that one.
2) I wasn't sure what a title was or how it differed from a game.
3) I was thinking I would leave one clean and rotate SD cards (or copy relevant files) to make the backup on the modded one.
I take it, then, that it would not be possible to do it that way?

You can use ntrboot to start GodMode9 for dumping the games without actually modifying anything on the second console (answer the question about embedded backup with 'No' on the unmodified console).

There is really no reason to not install custom firmware on a 2|3DS – other than "I do not want to do it on that one." (which I also say for some of my devices).
