so I finally got a new computer to replace the Dell dinosaur I had downstairs: a great Compaq Intel laptop w/ Win7 Home Premium. Possibly one of my best investments ever.

Can you guys give me a few suggestions for new software?

I currently have added:
Opera 10.10
Norton Security Suite
WMC Internet TV function (separate download and all)
7-zip File Manager
Mozilla Thunderbird

It also came with CyberLink disc software which I like as it is.

thanks

I'm personally a Firefox guy, but almost anything is better than IE.

I live and die by JDownloader for my piracy. That is, if you don't use torrents.

VLC is an awesome media player.

I'm not too fond of Norton. I'd use Malwarebytes (either free or full version) and another program.

Check here for more stuff.

first of all Norton is free with my ISP. I prefer the good ol' McAfee, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth!

CCleaner and Game Booster look good, and i guess a torrent client was a given.

Thank you guys

I would like to put in my vote for Chrome, jdownloader and utorrent. I've also created a backup folder of all necessary programs i ALWAYS install.

PS- i'm on Win7 64, and these all work (regardless of name... like the first one here lol)

Here's my list-
CDBurnerXP - freebie mp3>cd burning program (does more, i just use it for cds)
Google Chrome - You know this one.
Damn NFO Viewer - I read a lot of .nfo files, for ...various reasons

This is a small quick one.
jDownloader - An amazing program if you even half-regularly use megaupload or sites such as that.
mIRC - IRC, i use it way too much >_> (if you don't know, Internet Relay Chat. Yea, learn more elsewhere online

)
Partition Wizard - I need a partition manager. This is a freeware (home version) and it works like Partition Magic (a pay-for partition manager). Similar gui too!
IMGBurn - Great freeware Image Burning util. Works wonderfully
smile.gif

Skype - Yea, skype.
Steam - Yup, another common one.
µTorrent - A small, very nice torrent client.
WinRAR - The only zip utility i use anymore.

That's it for my backed-up, most-needed files!

However, if you're doing much in terms of Windows desktop editing (or you need to get into anything major inside of Win7), i just found this the other day, and it's a Godsend.
Add "Take-Owndership" To Your Right-Click Menu

It does what it says lol.

Hope that comes in somewhat handy. And if not, i hope it helps someone

EDIT:
Well, i was not familiar with Game Booster, however, that might get added to the list. Very interesting! (Thanks for that one!

Same. (edit: No not same, I use FireFox!)
Gamebooster, is it legit?

Well, i checked a few places (pcworld) and they say it does what it claims, but it depends on your system. I only have 2gigs of ram, so i'm sure it could help out with a few things. But they also recommend to use it with caution... as it kills and restarts unneeded processes when activated (before playing) and deactivated (after playing).

So, we'll see what happens when i have some spare time and test it out

I use it everyday because i have 512mb of ram on windows 7. Its awesome.

Whoa. 512meg? On a Win7 machine? That's gotta be harsh. I thought my 2gig was low.

Now I want to boast about my 4GB RAM :yaypc:

K-Lite Codec Pack over VLC
Pidgin if you chat a lot
CCleaner
Firefox
Launchy, if your lazy, like me

Also looking for essential programs to install on ma new Windows 7 installation

If I didnt have gamebooster, I wouldn't be able to do what I can now on it :3

Firefox, WMP, uTorrent, MSN with no lags.
M$ can suck it

Just got Steam (I'm still waiting for BioShock to install, lol) and am gonna get JDownloader. Looks great. And I already have a bunch of free CyberLink software, so I'm already covered for CD/DVD burning and stuff. I also used it on other laptops my family has and it also works well.

P.s. thanks for reminding me, I need an IM client, Pidgin looks good.

Here are a few I find good.

MPC-HC (VLC for files that won't play in MPC-HC)
Comodo firewall (only the firewall part I use)
Firefox
Daemon Tools
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spyware Blaster
Imgburn
Winamp
Foxit Reader
Ccleaner
Mozilla Thunderbird
MyDefrag

Game Booster looks a bit interesting, well the defrag game directory part does anyway. Cleaning RAM will have little to no effect, especially on OS like Windows Vista/7, which handle ram management quite well.
