Hacking Softmodding 4.0

I just put those files from the zip update on an sd card , inserted it and turned on the wii ,

I didn't get to run the WAD manager , it right away went to a black screen and says

"now repairing... DO NOT POWER OFF"

is that normal?

I never heard of this message. What system menu are you on ? If you're already on 4.2 you can skip the Update part, like the guide is clearly stating.

Edit:
Is your Wii's date set to 1st of April and is it already modded and has Preloader 0.29 installed by any chance ?
If yes it's crediar's April Fools joke and it's harmless.

If I recall, you can just press A.

I was on 4.1

no. wasn't set to apr 1st.

I don't find it harmless , since its stuck there and won't allow me to do anything.
what should I do ?

I inserted a different SD card with bootmii , and I can load that. but when I try to go to the system menu it brings back the same black screen with that message.

I do have a NAND backup , should I just re-install that?

ok, thanks. I hit A and it went to the preloader menu.

Was your Wii modded before, and installed with preloader ? Please answer this. Try pressing A a few times to get rid of the message.

If everything fails do a nand restore, but I don't think it should be necessary.

edit
So it is a pre-modded Wii, like I guessed

. Please do check you system date this error usually only occurs on the first of April.

edit 2
If you're on 4.1, and have preloader installed, you are already softmodded, why do you want to use this guide ?
4.2 has no advantages over 4.1 whatsoever.

you are correct . I checked it and changed it.

one more question , and I do apologize for asking all these questions in the OP's thread,

I thought I read that IOS 70 messes up pre loader , is that true?

I wanted to update it to 4.2 , because its also got a chip in it and any time I insert a newer game it keeps asking for the update on the disc channel. so I thought I'd just update it so it would stop doing that.

You're just missing a few IOS's probably. Just install those using DOP-IOS MOD. --> look here
Or i believe you could let Gecko OS install the missing ones, but I'm not to sure about that one, because I never used it.
Get it here

What game(s) is/are causing problems ?

so is there a way to set my wii to automatically load an app like backup launcher instead of the system menu? I heard you could use preloader...

NSMB , Madden 10 , and I think a couple others.

I wasn't going to do it , but I thought it might kill my HBC if someone else used the console and then hti the update by accident.

I went adead and followed the update and I think I got everything done ok.

I'll have to go check a game now.

I checked and I'm now on 4.2 , but its still asking for the update.

Is the game, or is your Wii itself asking for the update. If it's the last one it's because of the new shopping channel.
Otherwise for some reason you are missing a few IOS's like I mentioned before.

Did you complete the entire guide ?? You didn't skip anything ?

For NSMB you need to have IOS53 installed for it to work on modchip I believe. Just install it it using DOP Ios, and don't forget to patch it.

its the game, I think , thats asking for it.

The system doesn't ask for it unless I insert the game.

ok, thanks. yeah, I patched it already.

I just wanted to do the update and not have to re-install HBC , so that's the only part I did.

I meant patch IOS53

BTW: IOS53 is in the Upgrade folder of the simplistic mod, so you can also install this using Wad manager. You really should have completed the entire tutorial like it says in the beginning.

Also, if you have preloader and use the disc channel, why have you not enabled the skip disc update check hack?

because I'm still an amateur at this , I must have overlooked that. I'll do that now.

I have a question about the dop ios MOD v9

how do I know which IOS's I'm missing ?

The original console I was asking about is working fine now. I messed up something pretty bad , but I had the NAND backup and restored it .
I then went back and followed the tutorial again and got it all working perfectly now. set up priiloader and blocked the updates and NSMB works using disc channel with chip,
works with NeoGamma R8, and USB loader.

but the other console I have still doesn't want to read the game, though. I'm still getting the green screen and reboot back to the system menu.

so, back to my question, if I run Dop-IOS mod v9 , which IOS should I install?
I'm a bit reluctant to mess around with this , cause I don't want to screw the pooch.

I was thinking of just starting from the beginning again and following the guide, but I didn't know how it would affect everything since it would be installing over the stuff I've already done.
By the way, the console is updated to system menu 4.2 now and HBC is installed , and I've tried NeoGamma 8 and its working for other games , I just can't figure out what I missed that's making it not load NSMB.

also, I tried Bakugan and that's giving error #001

In dop-IOS, it should show you like what IOS is the most recent one and what IOS version you have and if you don't have it it would just be blank there AFAIK (not sure if the MOD version changed much), but you shouldn't have any trouble just installing the stuff from xzxero's update to 4.2 package again. It doesn't really matter what was on it before for installing those IOS's even if you had cIOSCORP or something. After installing the IOS's from that package you will be sure you have a fresh set of up to date official IOS's (although the trucha bug would be gone form IOS36 if you had that done already) which shouldn't really be a problem if you still have a cIOS installed. Installing the system menu wad as instructed will also take care of getting rid of preloader so that's technically accounted for as well.
