I came up with a fairly interesting idea while researching z80 computer stuff. Could we take an Arduino or similar and create an IDE interface that could allow hotswapping without an PATA based computer? Am I insane for coming up with this?

If you manage to have it copy the mod files to the harddrive then it might work.

The Xbox's HDD gets unlocked at boot and by playing an MP3 file, you can hotswap it.
Meaning it's still unlocked, thus having R/W access.

The main problem is locking it from what I understand, which is where the USB devices fail correct?

Powering down the Xbox and reconnecting the HDD to it suffices.
Atleast, most hotswap guides are like that (don't quote me on it, I always exploited them with saved game exploits)

If you're interested in developing it, I'd suggest installing a switchable chip into the Xbox.
Have a 8GB stock drive you can test things on and a clone (including it being locked with the same HDD key) as backup.

Oh, I never knew that bit, I tried to research that but I came up empty. I figured you could not make the XBox lock the drive! Good to know!

I'm not sure if the drive locks itself again or that the install script locks the drive.
I think it's the latter but I don't dare saying it (been quite a long time and doing this out the top of me head)

Got a US game for that?

Softmods don't mess with the drive in terms of locking/unlocking.
The Xbox boots, unlocks the drive, loads certain files and boots to the dash.
The softmods just insert them in the middle, after unlocking the drive, the softmods redirect the loading of dashfiles to the loading of arbitrary dash files which load a custom dash.

Games that are exploitable are Mechassault, 007 Agent under Fire and the original splintercell.
None must be Platinum hits (their patched).

Platinum hits version of splinter cell works fine, it is what i use to softmod oriignal xbox systems.

That's what I'm asking for, if you have a US copy of one I have a flash drive that works and I made a couple adapters.
