The problem is once you choose to modify the 3ds through exploits, you've voided any warranty you have.

yes and no it depends it voids nintendos warranty but if he had a 3rd party warranty like me he could be fine also nintendo isn't going to bother to check why the system doesn't work its more efficient for them to just send him a new one so even then he probably would just get a new system

Same thing happened to me - make sure you reinsert your microSD card. But on mine, the light just came on and switched off again.

Did you try to check if you have luma/payloads/start_hourglass9.bin and then hold start before and while booting 3ds ? And then restore your backup
