I heard SKY3DS can run japanese games with regionfour. i was looking for FE:IF, but in the compatibly list, it says not compatible, but it says (regionFour). Does that mean, it runs with regionFour or not?

No, unfortunately they have not fixed the template for Fire Emblem: If. So it doesn't work (yet).

The game doesn't even run on a Japanese 3DS via Sky3DS.

Thats the problem. I can only access my emunand after about 100000 retries to enter it. Only way is replace the launcher.dat and format emunand again

Weird, my 2DS doesn't have that problem. What version is your sysNAND and EmuNAND? It could be a faulty sd card.

Both are 6.0.0

Are they unlinked? I would update the Emunand to see if that helps but they have to be unlinked before the update. You'd have to backup your Emunand though, in case it gets messed up (I only say this because you probably have some important stuff on the Emunand).

You have to either format sysNAND or Emunand. I'd make a nand backup of both prior to doing this. Most people usually format sysNAND.

There was a guide/sticky about this, so I would look into it before attempting anything.

Sorry if its noobish, but if i format sysNand, wont it be updated?(Do i have to format it via gateway menu?)

Just to be sure that i understood everything:
I have to backup sysNand and emuNand.
Then i have to enter emuNand and format it
Correct?

Yup, backup both, copy the contents of the SD card to your PC, load Emunand and format. It's easier to format sysNAND though.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, from Maxconsole user Davhuit:

"Of course, you can (basically, the format with the SD card just force the 3DS to create a new folder for the sysnand when you put the SD card back in the 3DS, nothing more, so it's not related to the firmware version or such).

Format option do not require the last firmware, it just check if you can connect to internet for whatever reason but it doesn't update your firmware (it couldn't, it would be illegal to update without asking you, except if you purposely choose an option somewhere on your 3DS to automatically make the updates).

- Boot in sysnand.
- Go to systems settings.
- Go the page with format option (last one).
- Remove the SD Card and format WITHOUT THE SD CARD.
- Once it's formatted, 3DS will reboot. Once it's reboot, put the SD card back in. It'll create some new folders and here you go, sysnand and emunand are now separated."

That is if you format sysNAND, so you can keep Emunand. After it's done, load Emunand and update

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

You do know how to make a NAND backup, right?

Its currently formatting emuNand in gateway mode. Does it have to be formatted in the emuNAND system settings?

oh, wait sorry havent seen your edit

So do you plan on formatting Emunand or SysNAND? I've only ever formatted SysNAND to unlink them, so I can't say much for formatting Emunand. That's why I posted the guide.

Are you absolutely sure you're updating Emunand? Did you go directly to system settings app and start the update without exiting it?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
