Should I hold off for the new 3DS?

So I finally found a place to buy a 4.5 console, more expensive than most, but all I could find. Should be able to get it in November at the latest, but now I just heard about the new upgraded 3DS and I'm on the fence.

On one hand, it has more power so it will get exclusives that I will most likely want to play. On the other hand, definitely not compatible with gateway, which I need because I'm an european and we've already lost out on Rune Factory 4 and some Atlus published tittles, both big reasons why I want the 3DS in the first place. Believe me, I'd love to buy them like I did in the DS days, but Nintento won't let me. And my financial situation does not justify me buying another 3DS in the future, so I either buy one now and regret later due to the exclusives or hold off for the new 3DS and regret it later when region locking screws me over. Neither are attractive choices.

I know no one of has a crystal ball that sees the future, we can't know if the new 3DS will ever get hacked or if it will even have any worthwhile exclusives (DSI and the Gameboy Advance SP never did after all), but I just want to hear some honest opinions of this matter, since I am very confused and have no one else to talk about this. What are your feelings on the new 3DS? Are you worried at all, don't care, or can buy it just for the exclusive tittles you may want?

I'd ideally hold off until the end of next year to make my decision, see which developers would jump on the exclusive tittles or not, but by then it will be nigh impossible to find a 4.5 3DS that isn't used and costs a fortune, hence my decision in making this thread. I have some hopes most of my favorite publishers won't jump on the ship and that gamefreaks will make the pokemon series available to everyone, but one never knows.

Well it took the normal 3ds years to get hacked the way it is and its only on limited fw so using that as a guide you can make your mind up, you may have the same length of wait, if at all

I doubt very much the new one will be able to be hacked the 2DS cant and Niti will make sure and know 110% that Firmwares and updates on the 3DS model will be tight from 4.5.0 and beyond. So yes get one, I would in your position. I'm sorry but I think we will need to wait for the next generation handheld from Nintendo for the next hacked handheld the 3DS is done in my opinion

    * New 3DS

Writing "new 3DS" implies you're talking about getting the normal 3DS in new condition.

I've got a 2DS and will probably buy Smash Bros. later on for it but I doubt I'll consider purchasing a New 3DS unless there's an exclusive game I'd really want to play it, chances are it won't happen (it would be a Dragon Ball game for New 3DS released in the west which Bandai has not done at all for the normal 3DS).

I wont be buying one, I would rather save my cash and wait for the next proper generation handheld from Nintendo instead. I think this new 3DS is a silly move and why they did it, who knows!!!

If a decision had to be made immediately, I'd say to go with the 4.5 3DS & Gateway only because booting into Classic Mode now requires the red card to be inserted. Classic Mode does allow for region-free retail use, so you can still play import carts. Since you're planning for a November purchase, I'd say to hold off making a final call until the end of October for two reasons. The first reason is that we still don't have release date for the rest of the world. The second reason is that it would give the scene devs a couple weeks to tinker with the N3DS.

If the N3DS is exploitable, I don't think it will take as long as the 3DS did due to what we already know about how the 3DS OS works. If an exploit does exist, it's likely to be found within the new features. I expect the wireless backup utility to be the first thing picked apart by the exploit hunters, especially since the other end of it is a Windows application.

The new 3DS wont be exploitable because the FW will just carry on from 8x on the 3DS now etc.. or whatever FW it is on when they release it the same as what the 2DS did on release from the 3DSXL model, the FW was just a follow on.

I guess it's a matter of waiting and seeing until November then. I was gonna scrape by so I could get it for my BD in October, but I guess waiting a few extra weeks won't hurt (hopefully). I have my doubts about a possible exploit being found in such a short time, but no harm in waiting for a little while. If I see that my place can keep some 3DS's until December I might even wait until then, although the Christmas season makes that a risky move.

Worst comes to worst, I doubt Atlus and Gamefreak would ever leave out the old 3DS users, so there's still that. But all this upgrading stuff is making me dislike Nintendo. Consoles aren't meant to be like Iphones that have to be upgraded ever x years, it should last at least 5 years damnit. But that's just a personal pet peeve, on the inside I know how good all that extra power could be to the 3DS library, which is why I'm not writing it off like I did with the DSI.

get one,i would never count on hackers when is it about to wait for an hack,(if i think about the sad hypocrisism that the vita scene is on now...)the new 3ds may not even be hacked when the real next gen one comes out

The vita scene is just weird, it wouldve been a great system to be exploited with its nice screen....

Not like the 3DS scene is that great either. Our go-to card right now did cause some consoles to brick on purpose. Regardless of whether one sees their point of battling their competition that just stole their code or not, still a shitty thing to do to your consumers, especially to those who bought some cards they thought were real gateways but were fakes. And then there's the whole "we don't wanna do anything with piracy" thing, but don't try to do anything about the region locking that drove us many of us to it in the first place.

Kinda off topic, but it is a mighty good reason to buy it now. Do I really trust the hackers to do something in the far-off future? Truth to be told, not much....plus there's the whole PS3 thing, that was stuck for a long while and is still incompatible with many consoles that can't be downgraded.

In a couple days youll know if smash bros works, id wait till at least then.

Biggest chance for any usable exploits pass 4.5 seem to be if we could use smealums exploit to load roms, gotta remember even tho he says it shouldnt be possible, thats happened before. Of course maybe not.

Oh of course, don't even have the money for it now since it's gonna be about 350+ euros for the whole package (3DS, Gateway. SD card and charger). October at the earliest, first week of November at the latest is what I meant by "now", instead of holding off until the Christmas season or later for a hack, which is risky. Not that smash bros is my highest priority TBH, I could pass on that game. I'm more interested in fantasy life, but that's still about a month off.

Like you said there is no crystal ball but before (if ever) a later firmware is hacked. The 4.5 3ds will only become more rare and fetch a good price online.

wierd??the vita scene is in the hands of hackers who don't wanna hack because of morals (or scared of sony's revenge).and instead is fetching everyone with emulations exploits only (all of that while getting money from the ads of their sites thanks to these useless things they provide)

I most certainly wouldn't wait. You could be having months of fun with the 3DS RIGHT NOW. And when the New 3DS comes out, it will probably not be possible to hack it (at least not right way), which means you would have to buy all your games. And you just told us you don't have the money to get a second 3DS in the future. So I would think you also don't have the money to buy the games.

I personally will not get the New 3DS, but I will be having fun with my 3DS XL and wait for the REAL next gen handheld console from Nintendo.

I buy most of my games used, so I can afford to buy one once a month. Which isn't a lot at the end of the year, but count in birthdays and holidays and it's enough to get a lot of the games I want. Especially since it's going to be my only next gen console for a long while (don't care about any other library so far). I'm more into gateway because of the stupid region locking. I told myself I would buy the 3DS once Rune Factory IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV made it over. Well, SMTIV was a disaster to even get it here and we can't even buy a physical copy. I hate buying digital games when a hardcopy version is available. And Rune Factory is never making it over here. With NDS games I just waited for holidays to import them, in the rare occasions I couldn't find an European site that sold import versions. Did that with a lot of Natsume and Atlus games. But opps, can't do that now, and as a fellow European, you know how much it fucking sucks to be so fucked over by Nintendo for no reason. It's not like most games are even translated to my language. So screw them.

And I'm not gonna stand above anyone here, now that I have decided to buy gateway, you bet that I'm gonna pirate a lot games I wouldn't ever get otherwise. Not to mention a bunch of DS games thanks to the blue card. But what really kills me is that the money I'm going to put in just to get the 3DS. Paying 200 euros for one is fine. 280 to get it with gateway, acceptable. But I'm gonna spend around 400 euros to get this whole thing set up just because the 4.5 3DS are so rare now. It's at least not a used console, but it's enough to buy a PS4! That's a little harder to cough up, so it's not something that I can justify buying now, only to spend another 200+ euros in another 3DS in a year, plus who knows how much for another flash cart. And if it never gets hacked, who knows how much more expensive even used 4.5 3DS' will get.

But I have pretty much decided to go ahead and ignore the N3DS. Nintendo doesn't have a good track record with making the amount of exclusives they promise, remember the DSI and Game Advance SP, and most third party developers likely won't be stupid to ignore the previous 40 million userbase. Plus who knows, most exclusives might be Wii ports that I don't care about since I have a Wii. So thanks for the discussion guys, I've made my decision and will give my 3DS serial number to the appropriate thread once I get it.

Guys, remember that smealum has a working exploit for 5.X and beyond. That could possibly work with the new 3DS, and potentially lead to a kernel-mode exploit.
