Set format icon like VLC does?

I know that we have to add registry keys to select the icon we'll use with an specified file format. But VLC does it on a different way. It doesn't have just the code, because, for instance, a mp4 fle, has a thumbail of the video (and the VLC icon, but just at one side) as its icon. Do you know any way to do that, maybe with some extra code or something?

Um... the thumbnail is generated by Windows Explorer. If you set the "View" type to "Small Icons", then you''' see just the VLC icon. Additionally, if you leave the view type as thumbnails (or "large icons" too, I believe) and set the default player to Windows Media Player, you'll see the same thumbnail but with the Windows Media Player icon in the bottom-right hand corner instead of the VLC player.

So if you're creating your own media player, and you set your player to be the default player for any given file format, you will automatically achieve the effect that you're after.
