Hacking Semi-bricked Wii...

I have a modded Japanese Wii that I haven't touched in a while and it is semi-bricked... My sister popped in a US Wii Fit which is probably the last game that's been played on it. Now I found out to un-brick a Wii you just need to pop in the version of SMG that your Wii is so I got a copy (as in copy copy) of it did and it did not try to install any firmware. Now when I try and put in SSBB (Real US) it won't recognize the disk...

I think it may be the region brick because the copy of SMG (J) that I downloaded worked fine but I want to play in English.
