So, just got a PCH-1100, i.e. the 3G Vita. Pictures and stuff in the things you recently bought/got thread.

Before my daughter even brought the Vita home to me, I had already ordered a PSVSD and its extension cable, from Tindie. I also bought an SD2Vita adapter, intending to use both. Then I started really figuring out the what and how of Vita modding, and now I'm somewhat confused. I wrote this over in that thread where I posted photos:

"Screen protector already ordered. I also had to order a 4GB real Sony memory card. Why? Because I've been researching a BUNCH to figure out how to get that PSVSD installed and still be able to use the SD2Vita. The problem is, YAMT has to be turned off during the install process, so you can't run anything from the SD2Vita, and a plugin called usbmc needs to be installed at that time. I haven't found any guides that use the 1GB "virtual memory card" that is made by replacing NEAR (only needed for 1000 series if you don't have a memcard) for this. They all mention needing to use a Sony card. After the PSVSD is installed I think the 'full' version of YAMT can be installed which accomnmodates reading from the SD2Vita (as uma0) and the PSVSD (as ux0). But for some reason, nobody recommends installing the full YAMT right from the start. They all say use the "lite" version."

I kinda thought it would be nice having at least one of the real Vita memcards, so I don't care if I bought it unnecessarily. I just want to know, am I wrong? Or alternatively, should I try jailbreaking the Vita and then installing the PSVSD only? It can be done, this guy does it. (but I don't think he has really researched into all the little fixes he will need from plugins)

You could set the SD2Vita to another mountpoint and have emulators/Adrenaline load off off it.
As for YAMT, I don't know, I run some really old mounting tool I don't remember the name of, predates YAMT for sure.
One thing I do know is that once UX0 has changed, the database will rebuild itself and all the bubbles etc will be messed up.

Personally I just stick with a large microSD in my PSVSD, don't have that many on there to begin with and it's nice to play my legit copy of Minecraft.
Having the ability to run retail games without losing the entire layout etc is soo worth it.

First, thanks for the reply.

Second, could you please provide a little more context? I think what you're suggesting is that I should just use the 4GB memory card to get through the jailbreak and then install the PSVSD, and go from there. (@DinohScene suggesting the same thing) No need to mess with SD2Vita (at least for now), and no need to install YAMT. Yes?

I believe I'm also running usbmc.

But yeh just install TaiHEN and Enso etc from the official memcard, install the exploit etc to ur0, onboard NAND (I believe it does it automatically) install usbmc and set it to boot from the PSVSD, continue on setting the rest up having the PSVSD as your "new" memorycard.

This guide is super useful, sod the video.

Yes you need to jailbreak it to install the vpk to allow you to swap ux0 to the psvsd, since you have a phat model you would need a vita memory card. Alternatively you can also use StorageMgr. Yamt have issue with psvsd.

I'm a longtime lover of the "hacks.guide" family of helpful tutorials. But they don't have one for PSVSD. And most PSVSD installation instructions and/or videos I've found are by people who already have their vita hacked and using SD2Vita.

My Vita is currently a factory reset blank slate. The only actions so far, pick a language, provide wifi pw, and test connection.

The thing to keep in mind is that applications (including the one you may use as an exploit depending on which one you choose) install to ux0*, and by default so does the taihen plugin system (I recommend moving everything to ur0 instead)

* technically you can play with this because of the database-controlled design, but it's not worth the effort and besides you need a modded console in the first place

Remember that officially uma0 is just for PSTV updates and, just like on most other platforms, dealing with multiple disks/partitions is more of an annoyance than any benefits you get out of that

So basically the roadmap is:
- Run Henkaku in some way or the other (even on the 3.60 browser exploit you'll need to have something as ux0 to meaningfully do this as MolecularShell is installed to ux0)
- Switch to full VitaShell
- Downgrade to 3.65 with Modoru if you need to (yep you need something as ux0)
- Install Enso or some variant of it* for a coldboot and more reliable (through less dependencies) exploit (yep you need something as ux0)
- Repartition if you want to (smart thing as these "M3" cards aren't exactly reliable)
- Install plugins of your choice, including one that will mount the psvsd as ux0 (you'll need to transfer or reinstall stuff to the new ux0)

* the biggest appeal to me at the time was, iirc, native sd2vita support so probably not terribly interesting to you lol

And most PSVSD installation instructions and/or videos I've found are by people who already have their vita hacked and using SD2Vita.
At the high level (ie after supplying one of the various appropriate drivers) there's negligible differences between psvsd and sd2vita, or even official imc0/xmc0 - all that matters is that you end up with something mounted as ux0, so you could do the whole setup using an official memory card!
