Hacking Second hand O3ds with firmware 7.1.0

I have an old 3ds with the firmware listed in the title and wondering about how I'd go about installing homebrew and what not for my nephew. All he wants to play is the new Pokemon Dungeon and a few other things. Originally I got him a Sky3ds but with the AP blocks I am unsure where to turn, would I follow this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/ and just use a Cubic Ninja rom to homebrew it and put xtools on it? Or do I go buy a Gateway?.

TLDR, I am just a little confused on what I should be doing and any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

That is for 9.0-9.2 so I assume I'd need a cart to update to that specific firmware?

just use rxtools devmode to update from 7.1 to 9.2

Hmmm I need a little help.. using: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/ and up to step three and launching rxtools for the first time using cubic ninja, from there I booted and did the installation data suite, it completes goes backs to system menu where I see all the menu icons, music, cubic ninja and what not but it also has 4 black icon, one with the word Bannner and then FBI. I tired booting rxtools again and all it does is now throw me back to the system menu with all the icons and the 4 black icons.

The 4 black icons is a bug and it's normal, after updating the emunand they will disappear. Before updating always check in the settings that there is an RX before the version number, but be careful because if you leave the settings it will return you to your normal nand (I think that it's still like this even right now)

There is an RX-E before 7.1.0 yeah, but the guide says I need to boot emuand, so basically I assume I am in the emunand mode? and thankyou for ya reply krisztian1997 been poking at this for most of the day for my nephew
