Scene dev ChrisPVille showcases RP2040 optical drive emulator for the GameCube

F1MnPe7XoAEA3k_.jpg

A recent post by scene dev ChrisPVille, who has been delving into GameCube hardware for a long time, says they are currently working with TeamOffBroadway and trevorrudolph on what is said to be a $5 solderless ODE for the Nintendo GameCube. They claim that the modchip will feature loading games from either an SD card or local WiFi connection, a built-in configuration menu, and faster loading times than the majority of storage adapters such as the SD2SP2 and SD Gecko. A teaser video was uploaded, followed by a few photos of the device in action. Its supposed release date is at the end of 2023

QUICK UPDATE: Macho Nacho has recently posted a video review on the FlippyDrive emulator. It is now in the final production phase, where review units have been shipped off to many creators to try it before its release date. In other news, they are working on an ethernet add-on for the FlippyDrive.

Nice work, but... $5 for an amateur product with a custom or semi-custom flat cable and a "$4" CPU from a company that notoriously advertises pre-tax nominal prices that no seller follows for a year or so? Yeah sure

Was referring to the price point for the Pico. Still, its a good price point nevertheless.

So it's as easy as plugging a ribbon cable (or few of them)? Where will it be plugged exactly? And the board has the sd card reader in there, or are you supposed to get something else for that like the SD2SP2?

It plugs right in where the DVD drive connector is on the motherboard.

An ODDE that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and could potentially resolve issues with slow content streaming causing BGM’s and FMV’s to skip? Uhh, yes please - put these men in a clean room and serve them pizza and Mountain Dew until the deed is done. Once the job’s complete, maybe they can look back at other systems that desperately need this kind of treatment.

Hopefully then we don't have to install a drivechip or GCLoader.

I still would install some kind of SD solution (memory card slot or expansion port) either way because it adds functionality that’s simply not available directly from the disc drive side of things, but yes, if this can be a drop-in replacement for the optical drive that’s cheap then it’s a game changer. GCLoader is the closest thing and it’s significantly more expensive, not to mention that the Pi by its very nature is open to all sorts of tinkering and tweaks.

How different the wii and gc dvd drivers are from a technical standpoint? The wii ones can read gamecube mini DVDs (or whatever it was called), so a fully functional opensource ODE may help the community to develop a wii ODE?

(not that we need a wii ODE, but it would still be awesome)

Yeah I already bought the GCLoader a couple years ago and love it and even if it was $ at least it wasn't $$$. Have you seen how much Saturn ODE's cost?!?! These guys need to tackle that console.

pico saves the day again now to scoop up a used dol 001 gc and a rpi 2040 (my last fully modded gc the wires fried DOA) luckly got a refund dol-101's are a pain cause of some wires need to be solidered on the underside of the mb so the wires can easily be cut unknowingly during reassebly or transport

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
