Hi! I kind of just made this account for this post because I’ve asked this in two different discord servers and they’re either ignored me or it was just crickets..

Anyways! I’ve been trying to back up some Splatoon save data using Savemii and I’ve noticed that it would just give me a red error screen that says “not owner” or something along the lines of that.

I’ve seen other people have the same issue with Splatoon and backing up data, I just haven’t seen any kind of solution regarding it. If anyone knows what to do please.. lmk….

Did you choose a user? Go to backup, choose a slot and then below that choose the user you want to backup. If you don't choose a user, you will get a red screen. I had it too yesterday

I select the user each time I try, and it still gives me the error. Thx for being the first person to answer though :,)

No problem. What savemii version do you use? Last time I checked mine it was on 1.6.5 i and it's the aroma app. Maybe your version is outdated.

It's working for me, I have tested it now. So maybe it has something to do with your user profiles. Could it be that you are trying to backup the save data of some profile where the password wasn't confirmed in a long time or which is belonging to another person? Hence the error "not owner"?

Hi @lassieR ! As we discussed in the Discord server, there's a problem with your SD card. To perform a backup, Savemii attempts to create all folders in the "sd:/wiiu/backups/<TitleHexId>/<profiles>/..savedata..." hierarchy. If the folder exists, it tries the next one. But in your case, the Wii U refuses to create the sd:/wiiu/backups folder due to an ownership issue with one of the two folders, ans savemii reports the "Not owner" error. Now, ruling out any problem with the sdcard rw toggle:
  • Worst-case scenario: the SD card is corrupted. You'd need to restore the Aroma content to the same or a different SD card and try again.
  • Best-case scenario: a homebrew application has changed the permissions. Simply rename the backups to backups_old and launch Savemii. If the backup process works, you can move the contents of backups_old to backups. If it still complains, then the problem is with the wiiu folder.
  • If the backups folder does not exist: The problem is with the wiiu folder
To check that your problem is indeed the one I'm telling you, use an FTP client to connect to your WiiU. (FTPiiu plugin) WiiU and provide the output of
ls /fs/vol/external01
ls /fs/vol/external01/wiiu
ls /fs/vol/external01/wiiu/backups

As @Technician has pointed out, Splatoon backups work without any issues. I've backed up and restored some 100% Splatoon savefiles in the past just for testing purposes.

Hi! sorry to reply so late, but that's besides the point.
I don't think it's the SD card, but I'll get the FTPiiu client (because I didn't have it beforehand) and I'll provide any updates here :).

So it looks like I had FTPiiu beforehand, but I reinstalled it anyway. Even after all of that, it did nothing :(. I am starting to think it may be my SD card unfortunately..

I think so. There's probably some corruption in the wiiu folder that's preventing savemii from creating the backup folder.

If the backup folder doesn't exist, you can try creating it manually, as we discussed yesterday. It might work, but it will hide the real problem. In any case, you can try it.

The most direct explanation for the error is that savemii is trying to create the backup folder, but the wiiu folder doesn't have the necessary permissions. Therefore, the problem would be with the wiiu folder.

You can try renaming the wiiu folder to wiiu_old, creating a new wiiu folder, and then copying the contents of wiiu_old to wiiu. Finally, delete the (now empty) wiiu_old folder. This will only fix the problem if the problem only affects the wiiu folder.

Two things you can try before downloading the aroma files again (it won't take long, anyway). Check that the wiiu folder isn't marked as read-only (in the folder's Properties). This is Ok:

You can also force a scan of the SD card (Properties > Tools > Check SD Icon) to see if it finds any fixable errors.

Ok! I just loaded in a new SD card for my Wii U anyway, the one I was using previously was like a year old and was used for an mp3 player. But genuine kudos to you for helping me with this <3
