Hacking Run ps3 without ihs?

I've delided my ps3 and I was going to replace the tim and put the ihs back on, but is it possible to remove the sheilding and mount the heatsinks to the bare ihs?

I didn't do an A/B test but the leading opinion was negative - you'd need a truckload of paste to fill the gap
