At 3xG we don't normally comment on rumour, and have had to specifically create the category on our site for this very article.

A reliable source at SCE London Studio (makers of various EyeToy games and applications) has informed us that he or she has witnessed end-to-end user testing of 3D Eye chat.

On the surface this doesn't sound like much, but think a little deeper and you can see this is a very big deal.

It makes sense with the current push behind 3D that Sony would persue such a venture, bringing 3D video communication into the living room and maybe even the office.

Moreover this also means that a 3D Eye is being developed which means Sony are stepping on Microsoft's' toes when it comes to 3D space detection with a camera.

If Sony were to expand on this and use the Cell Processor to calculate extraordinary 3D accuracy over and above what Kinect can achieve, we could see Kinect easily superceded.

As it stands at the moment this is a rumour and we are speculating, but you have to admit that 3D video chat would certainly be a good way to generate consumer interest, especially those with relatives and loved ones living far away.

If your saying there ripping off Microsoft with that, then your wrong.
He's not. If they go and release a new camera featuring 3d cameras and add bone-tracking for games, then they completely "ripped off" microsoft.
Although, which company is NOT ripping somebody off these days ?

'Cause they had something like the eye toy first?

Nintendo? At least not at that level

my god sony, you already lost my respect on move, gained my hatred on the 3DS bashing, now this.
sony is pathetic now
it's a shame though, i loved my ps1 and ps2....

but on the who ripped off who topic, nintendo probably is the one that does it less imo (although they still did it once)

But wait, Nintendo hasn't had it yet. How can Sony steal ideas from anything other than than Nintendo?

I don't know if it would supersede it, since it would require using one or more SPEs on the Cell processor, leaving fewer for the games themselves that would be using the technology, while Kinect is all done on it's own hardware before sending the results to the XBox 360 console.

lol. Everybody is bashing how Sony copies everybody else, but don't have original ideas. lol.

Move was made all the way back in the early PS2 era, it's just that they didn't decide to release it. Eyetoy can basically do everything Kinect can do, and it's more accurate because of the 2D sensor, but they have the depth.

I can't believe that I would see Nintendo fanboys (although I'm just defending Sony, people probably think I'm a Sony fanboy) ever.

I think Sony is mostly bashed these days because they always act like "No this tech is crap" and then a year later or so they do exactly the same and they act as they did invented something genious and even better the fanboys act the same way everything sucks until it comes for Sony PS3 the best example is the Move btw. And that's why it's taken Sony so long to release Move then?

It's not like the Wii has been thrashing the PS3 for sales is it?

Let me guess, Sony also has a 3D PSP which they've had for 5 years? they just simply decided not to release it.

they ripped off Microsoft?
that thing doesn't have a 3D camera,
& the kinect looks like wiis sensor bar.
but the 3DS does have 3D camera meaning they ripped off Nintendo again.
the 3DS hasn't even been released yet & there stealing.

Most PS3 games don't even come close to using 4 cores (multiplatform games are coded for the 360 and then ported, so only use 3) so I don't see how this would be any problem at all.

So now you think Kinect doesn't have a 3D camera? so what are those 3 Camera's for?

This has nothing to do with the 3DS, it is known that the 3DS's hasa 3D camera which points away from the user. So it won't be used in the same way as Kinect, as that faces the user.
