If Sony were to expand on this and use the Cell Processor to calculate extraordinary 3D accuracy over and above what Kinect can achieve, we could see Kinect easily superceded.
I don't know if it would supersede it, since it would require using one or more SPEs on the Cell processor, leaving fewer for the games themselves that would be using the technology, while Kinect is all done on it's own hardware before sending the results to the XBox 360 console.

Most PS3 games don't even come close to using 4 cores (multiplatform games are coded for the 360 and then ported, so only use 3) so I don't see how this would be any problem at all.

More I research this matter more interesting it gets,
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
QUOTEThe processor, internally codenamed "Waternoose" by IBM[1] and XCPU by Microsoft, is based on IBM's PowerPC instruction set architecture, consisting of three independent processor cores on a single die. These cores are slightly modified versions of the PPE in the Cell processor which was designed specifically for the PlayStation 3.[2][3] Each core has two symmetric hardware threads (SMT), for a total of six hardware threads available to games.
On May 17, 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed some specifications of the Cell processor that would be shipping in the forthcoming PlayStation 3 console.[22][23][24] This Cell configuration will have one Power processing element (PPE) on the core, with eight physical SPEs in silicon.[24] In the PlayStation 3, one SPE is locked-out during the test process, a practice which helps to improve manufacturing yields, and another one is reserved for the OS, leaving 6 free SPEs to be used by games' code.
Plot thickens
QUOTE
Note that the relationship between cores and threads is a common source of confusion. The PPE core is dual threaded and manifests in software as two independent threads of execution while each active SPE manifests as a single thread. In the PlayStation 3 configuration as described by Sony, the Cell processor provides nine independent threads of execution.

At this point I was about to hit submit I realized that all this hardware discussion is pointless. It's not the number of cores or threads make me buy a console.

Wow...First the Wii and now MAYBE the Kinect?

Serious Sony, come up with some new ideas now.

That's too bad. If true, that would hurt Sony's image a little bit but not to most fanboys. EVERYBODY is on some kind of gimmick. Apple on not being able to have bars[1], Nintedno likes being the best, Sony likes copying, Microsoft like enabling indecent exposure by minors on their console.

Personally I think that every company copy's one another, but Nintendo do do it the least (lol do do). But that also makes technology evolve. Take Kinect for an example, IMO it was inspired by the wii but microsoft tried to make their own innovative way of immersing players into the game and whether or not it works is yet to be told but all I'm saying is company's copying one another just makes the technology evolve.

actually, i read that they took the hardware out of Kinect so that they could lower the price, and it takes about 20% of the 360's processing power

There's gotta still be something in there for this $149.99 price which is floating about. It's going to be intresting to see Kinect when it gets stripped down.

You would assume they are taking a hit on Kinect to boost adoption.

If this actually happens then I hope the regular eye will get a price reduction.

I can't believe that I would see Nintendo fanboys (although I'm just defending Sony, people probably think I'm a Sony fanboy) ever.

GoNintendo has a lot of them in the comment section, its terrible.

nothing you can do about the fanboys here, anytime a thread like this is posted
z0mg sony stole everythingz11!!!111 (or they ripped off this and that, ect...)
that is basically what the whole thread is full off
pointless trolling

competition is always good for the consumer because it give them more options, and of course competitive pricing between companies benefits the consumer

Just make a 3d usb camera god they already have those sony is trying to kind of force people to get 3d tvs

nintendo probably is the one that does it less imo (although they still did it once)
and what was it?

it was the classic controller pro

but looking back on it, it wasn't so much as a rip off though.
i thought it looks like the Sony Controllers, but it feels more like a GCxSNES controller

WOW. You'd expect that on a respectable forum like this there wouldn't be so many idiotic 'OMG LOL SONY RIPPED OFF MS NOW!!' kind of responses. But who am I kidding? :/

I mean come on people motion gaming? Anyone remember those golf peripherals on the good ole' PS2? Hey? This argument could go on forever but it's seriously meaningless. And remember how in the EYE TOY you used your BODY just like in kinect to control games? Then again the SNES had some pretty nifty gadgets too. There really is no such thing as ripping off here, I mean unless Sony went and made something called 'The Legend of Kevin Butler' or 'Super Kevin Bros'...well thats what you call ripping off.

-_-

I would agree with you on this topic, but when I look at the Sony Move, I really don't know what else to think.
