Rumor: Sonic playable in Super Mario Galaxy 2

UK magazine Ngamer has posted an interesting tweet on Twitter this afternoon, making a rather bold claim that not only comes right out of the left field and has left us all a bit dazed and confused here at Nintendo Life Towers.

We should stress this is currently deep in the realms of rumour territory for now, with no confirmed word from Sega or Nintendo, so please take it with a rather large pinch of salt for the time being.

Here's the Tweet in question:

We've just had some shocking news from an inside source at Nintendo: Sonic will be a playable character in Mario Galaxy 2! Wha?

They sound about as surprised as we are! As always we'll keep you posted if the blue speedster and the world's favourite plumber do indeed join forces outside of the Olympics.

Perhaps it could be true - Mario travel to different planets In 'Galaxy' & Sonic been appearing in many Nintendo games - So Mario MAY bump into Sonic on a planet...

If it isn't Sonic then maybe it could be 'Shadow'
(let's see Mario.... Maria.... .... Hmmm both names LOOK similar)


OR it could just be a special 'unlockable' mini game

I didnt grow up with Mario, i grew up with my sega and my sonic

So would Sega's logo have to be slapped on this game? I'm not sure about licensing issues, but it seems like a hell of a stretch to think they'd go through the trouble for this. Yes, Mario and Sonic have been in the same games before, but not bumping each others series. We don't even see Nintendo characters from different series in each others games (and wouldn't Fox McCloud be more appropriate for Galaxy anyway?

Unless they're planning a Kingdom Hearts type thing (which would be lame anyway, considering how this is a Mario platformer) it would be extremely out of place to have exactly one crossover character. So I tend to not believe it.
