Well i don't think u need too many cartridges for it... They can change the graphics engine and compress it to 256mb, look at Crystal Chronicles or even FF4 which have simlar graphics to tht of FF7 of PS1, surely they can do something of tht sort...
I really felt tht FF7 could be made for the DS when i saw FF4
Excellent work Square

I thought DS cartridges could go up to 2 Gb? Someone told me they could. Anyways Final Fantasy VII on DS would be excellent

The largest DS game is 256 megabytes. World Destruction is going to use this size (IIRC, there was a link on the Gamefaqs board from an official interview. They were planning to cram in 80 minutes of video if that's even possible.). ASH used this size as well.

I really don't know how well the videos and such could be compressed. The real roadblock would probably be licensing/copyright issues as opposed to space or technical limitations.

The actual 3D graphics in FF7 were well within the DS' ability to produce. Maybe the battle would need a bit of tweaking, but the out-of-battle graphics were pretty primitive (low-poly 3D character models on a pre-rendered 2D background). Resident Evil had the same style. I think that game was a bit more advanced (graphically) than FF7 and the DS pulled that off well enough (WITH all the voice acting and videos intact!). Ninja Gaiden DS also comes to mind.

The battle was what made FF7 so advanced. The 3D models were pretty good for the time and the effects and animation was impressive. FF4DS' battle engine actually had similar graphical capabilities to FF7's:

FF4DS- 5 main character models at once. 6 enemy characters. The framerate ran at a constant 25-30FPS. It was in a simple and fairly small 3D space with some optical-illusions to convey depth.

FF7- 3 main character models at once. I don't know the maximum enemy amount. 20-25FPS. The battle field had more 3D models than the DS games. The battlefield was considerably bigger with some environmental touches (3D rocks, boxes, and other such objects spread around).

FF4DS may use a chibi-style, but it's purposeful, not a technical limit. I think the models could potentially be MORE detailed than FF7's if they were in proportion. The cutscenes certainly show off the engine's ability to express the characters' emotions.

Does anyone know how big FF7 was WITHOUT the videos and space-sucking stuff? I'm pretty sure the music wasn't very big. Similar to midi quality (the PC version WAS midi).

It's not a matter of it will fit or not, it's a matter of will Square make it or not..
I loved the game when I tried it a few months ago for the first time on my PSX, although I got too busy and forgot about it..
I'm not even sure how far I was in the game, I think it was right after Gongaga, apparently Cosmo something..

Lots of people think that due to the PS3 tech demo, it should...well, be on the PS3. I think this is just a topic about whether or not it's possible to do on the DS, since we have now two remakes. Granted, considering FF7 and Sony's relationship, a Nintendo showing probably isn't likely, but...well, we're not the ones making the shots here.

i want it on ps1. no reason to bring it back. no remake, no spin off. Re-release over download should be the only option.

If this does get a remake, I wouldn't go pick it up on the first day. I mean, fans might kill for it because there's a strong demand for it and people would do anything to get a hold of a copy, just like how people got hurt over the PS3 >_> .

Why remake it on the PS1? I'm enjoying it on my PSP as we speak.

Ripped from original disk too, mwahahahaha~

I personally don't care on which system it comes out (I will cackle madly if it's put on WiiWare or DS or so), but I may be bothered to check it out once it hits the $20 mark. I mean, I did like the original game and all, but not so much that I get hard just thinking about it being remade in some form.

That said, my money's on it being PS3. *shrugs* Maybe SE will put it on the 360 for NA/EU releases? XD

*Sigh* I'm sure the DS cartridge had a limitation of up to 512MB but the largest games made to date only use a 256 MB cartridge. But apparently the larger cards have a slower data transfer rate than that of smaller cards e.g. 64 MB this is probably why developers are hesistant to use them.

That someone probably got mixed up with 2048 Mb (256 MB) which is the largest DS game size to date.
