I bought a cheap PS2. It is in a good condition and it was modded with ripper 3.1. I successfully loaded film DVDs, music CDs as well as backups of PS2 games. The problem is when I insert a ps1 backup (specifically metal gear solid 1 i burned from european bin/cue files with a macbook 2010 at 8x speed). Every time I try to load the game I'm either met with a black screen or the browse menu telling me that a disc read error has occurred. I still do not have a memory card yet. The ps2 version is 50004.

What could be the cause for the problem? Bad cd-r? Something with the mod?

ps2 dvds do work. i have a burned vice city stories backup, works flawlessly. I should probably buy a cd to burn wlaunchelf to. also im new to this stuff

There could be a problem with the CD laser. Try a PlayStation 2 CD, not DVD. Only a few PS2 games came on CD.
It really could be, I tried playing a burned audio CD and while it detected the amount of tracks it did not play them, it had only produced some werid sounds. However a standard official music CD works flawlessly. Im not sure how the same laser could scan both types so differently

Because you have a Ripper 3, there is a mode to force PS1 mode if it thinks that the game is still PS2. Whilst the console is turned on, press RESET twice and it should boot your backups.
