Retroarch+nestopia 2 players not working

Hi! So recently I wanted to play some NES games with my dad. I don't have a second controller, so I decided to split the joycons, which worked good with snes9x. But for some reason, no games allow me to select 2 players, and no games seem to be responding to player 2 input. I've checked the settings, and everything seems to be mapped ok, so I can't figure out why joycon 2 might get issues, as again snes9x works fine when splitting joycons. Any ideas to fix this? Thanks!
