Hi guys,
I have noob questions about 2 steps, because I don't want to make any mistake :)

In tuto for o3DS, we have:
1. "Boot into GATEWAY 3DS sysNAND mode (Force GW Menu by holding down L during boot, hold B while pressing A to boot)"
=> I don't understand the "hold B while pressing A to boot". Because the objective is just to launch the Gateway hidden menu (holding down "L" button), to be able to launch the new time machine from there and downgrade to FW 2.0, isn't it ?

2. "A9LH will be installed & sysNAND will be restored from NAND.bin"
=> What is this "NAND.bin" ? I think this is the emuNAND which is on my SD card and which is not visible by Windows, isn't it ? Or is this NAND.bin the file on the root of the SD card, which was made after a backup of my sysNAND ? But in this case, how will I be able to upgrade the emuNAND in the future ?

Don't use the Gateway downgrade method. Use https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

Gateway's method is just copied code from other people, with the safety precautions removed, worse instructions, and a couple of mistakes. And if you use it you'll only be able to run Gateway. If you want a9lh, do a normal a9lh installation and use Gateway's arm9loaderhax.bin.

Launcher.dat needs to be on the SD Card's root as far as I know, or have they changed it so it can be read from the same directory as the A9LH binary..?
The launcher.dat must be on the root still; the arm9loaderhax.bin needs it to be there I believe, unlike most other CFWs where the whole CFW code is within the single bin file, if I understand correctly.

Aye, the Gateway binary is just the same as their 3dsx. It just points to the Launcher I guess.

i can go to gateway menu but when i select boot in gateway mode, nothing happens just black screen?
If you are using EmuNAND then I'm not sure what the problem could be, it is working fine on my end.

However, did you remove your EmuNAND when setting up A9LH? If it's not removed completely then Gateway is still detecting it but obviously it will black screen because the EmuNAND would not be "complete". You can remove EmuNAND completely using EmuNAND9 -> Format SD (No EmuNAND) option.

when i boot gateway sysnand (pressing b while on gw menu) it works...
but gateway emunand only blackscreen...

i didnt remove my emunand while i set up the a9lh, but i updated it to 11.0 when im on luma...

If I have a hardmod and can use Gateway (I'm on sysNAND 4.5, emuNAND 10.x or something), are there any parts of Plailect's guide I can skip or should modify to install A9LH?

Personally, there is no point being on 4.5 ofw with emunand. Each to their own I guess and if it's not broke don't fix, yet if I was in your position, I'd update to 9.2 and start the guide from the start.

Depending on your needs and simplicity, emunand is not needed imo, as I'm happy with my current setup running from a Luma sysnand 11.0 without a emunand.

Outside of getting a hardmod done due to an accidental update last year, I honestly haven't messed with my 3DS much at all since I got Gateway back when it was first released. The fact I'm on 4.5 is pretty much due to that being the "golden firmware" back then, and my reluctance (and laziness) to really mess with it at all. I've been perfectly happy playing the occasional 3DS ROM and eShop games I've purchased. But the ability to coldboot into emuNAND is getting more and more tempting. I just want simplicity and to continue to be able to place 3DS ROMs and eShop games I've bought, without having to launch the sysNAND browser (or the NDS Profile) just to launch Gateway's emuNAND.

Yeah I get that, as I didn't want to update my 4.5 some time ago, however, a 100% boot rate, decrypt9/hour glass, emunand tool, etc, available on boot (even though you have a hard mod) is cool to have.

Plus firm protection by default, region free for original cart, ds flash card support are also a number of cool things to have.

Also, once done on a9lh, you still have the option to use the gw card with cfw by using GW's payload, so you have best of both of using cia installs and drag n drop roms for the cart.

You make some great points. So then all in all, update to 9.2 and start from the beginning? This guide walks through setting up rxTools. Is that the only way to update sysNAND to 9.2?

Yeah, that should be okay to do it but make sure your in rx tools dev mode when in sysnand or it will brick. The a9lh install guide uses fbi but that rxtools one should suffice as long as you use development mode when booted in gw sysnand.

Hi All,

Haven't read the full topic, but I know a guy who helped with the gateway community and I succesfully installed the gateway method.

First of all:
You MUST have a 9.2 sysnand backup (or be able to create one)
You cannot use browserHAX as the exploit to trigger the gateway timemachine (black screen), but using browserhax you can install menuhax, which does work.

So, quick tut.:

- Download the 4.0 folder AND the OTP file for your region from the gateway tutorial and extract approprietly
- Boot gateway 4.0b Launcher.dat (browser exploit), which you obviously placed on the root of your system's SD card
- Hold L to go into you menu
- Create 9.2 sysnand backup if you haven't already and copy it to your pc
- Start DS in gateway mode
- Press select and launch the timemachine
- perform UPGRADE to 10.3 (this is where the 9.2 sysnand backup is REALLY IMPORTANT)
- When your DS is rebooted in 10.3, user browserhax to boot the homebrewlauncher (package can easily be found on Google)
- Install menuhax and reboot your DS holding the L button. You should immediatly be in the homebrew launcher (through menuhax, not browserhax-
- Here comes something they FORGOT to add to the tutorial
- (!!) Copy the BOOT.3dsx provided by gateway from the root of your system's SD to the 3ds folder on your gateway microSD!
- rename it to gw_timemachine.3dsx
- This previous step (menuhax) allows you to load the timemachine app (otherwise a black screen on browserhax)
- Choose downgrade 2.X and if you placed you .otp in the right folder (system SD root) it should start the downgrade.

Now you should boot to firmware 2.x

- Start the gateway menu by opening the browser and surf to go.gateway-3ds.com
- Don't forget to hold the L button for the menu to pop up or your system will freeze until you reboot

- Make sure the 9.2 sysnand backup is in the root your system's SD card and is called nand.bin
- In the menu choose AL9H install and BAM, if you NAND.bin is found it'll copy you 9.2 sysnand back and automagically install the arm hax.

- Reboot machine

--- SUCCES!!

You're all welcome :D

Edit:
I have emuNAND already installed on the system's SD card.
Format emuNAND if you haven't done already right after you dumped you sysnand.

I was also able to update the emunand from 10.7 to 11.0 succesfully.

Lol yeah, we can tell you didn't read the topic if you're happy to have installed GW's "FAST BOOT" when everyone here is saying that the traditional a9lh is better :P

I know, but I haven't installed any traditional al9h exploits before.
I also don't need it cause it's just to play my games using the gateway and prevent my nephew from accidentally updating sysNAND.

Since I strumbled a lot with their tutorial, I thought those who'd like to use just the gateway exploit could use a more detailed tutorial. :D
