Do region free games work with different region games using system link?

e.g american halo 3 system linked with a european version of halo 3

If a game is region free in EUR, the USA version will also be RF and vice versa. They are basically all identical when RF except for the JPN versions.
I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

thanks for the replies guys i feel more positive in buying region free then. But if anyone does know an answer i would be happy to know!
