Hacking Recovery mode/ Sade Mode boot - From local server?

I thought I saw a link a year or so ago somewhere indicating you can setup a local HTTP server to be the man in the middle to force recovery mode update from a local server on your network.

Is this possible? If so anyone have a link to a how to? I googled and searched and could not find anything.
