I have a Rebug CFW PS3 slim with display problem. There are many small rectangular shapes/artifacts displayed on the screen via HDMI. If I go into the SETTINGS menu then half of the screen is messed up. I can still play games but the screen has many small rectangular shapes/artifacts. I think it has to do with the graphics card. Can this problem be fix?

you can reset the video mode. While turning on your PS3, hold the power button down for about 5 seconds until you hear two beeps. This should reset your video settings to basic and allow you to configure the output (composite/component/HDMI) choice. is that doesn't work, then it's probably a gpu problem. I've never seen what it does exactly on the ps3, but the 360 gets graphical problems like a checkered board pattern if the gpu is about to fail.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

also, try another hdmi cable, component cable if that doesn't work, or another port on the tv.

Thank you for your inputs. I tried using another HDMI cable as well as on another TV port but the display problem still exists. I also did the Restore Default Settings within the Safe Mode. It reset back to 480p then detected HDMI for 1080p with the display problem present in both resolution. I am thinking that it is the GPU that is beginning to fail. I read on the internet that you could clamp the GPU down for a quick fix or maybe redo the thermal paste.

I just bought another PS3 slim 2001A for $20. I will swap out the 120gb HDD with the 1TB HDD (in my broken PS3). It will take a very long time to reinstall all of the games.

if everything is working with that ps3, that's not a bad deal. thermal paste would probably be a temp fix. do you know what the temps are even like? you can see them in rebug toolbox, which you probably have if on rebug. it's probably not worth diagnosing and fixing when ps3s are so cheap as you already know. I have a 1TB hdd. it will go quick if you use an ethernet cable. I get 10MBs/s, and I don't even have a gigabit connection. you'll probably get two to three times that if your computer has one.

PS3s can be had for really cheap. I have three PS3 slims running Rebug CFW. The newly bought $20 slim will just replace the one with the bad GPU. It is just not worth the time to diagnose and fix a hardware problem.

Update: A few hours of usage after the graphical artifacts showed up and now the PS3 display is all black. The PS3 is now dead. This is a picture of the display artifacts before the PS3 died due to the gpu failure.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
