Does this mean R4 Clones?

Yup! It means every competitor now can use their code and bash out cheap clones.

On the plus side, it could mean R4 going open source and with that it could mean fixes come faster and the old download play problem could be fixed for good.

It was bound to happen eventually anyway, its obvious that the M3 and R4 are the same with a few minor cosmetic tweaks so both must of known the encryption or gave each other the source.

At this point I'm unsure if breaking the encryption is a good thing or not....time will tell.

Well, that still would mean this is positive. Just watch out for cheap clones and you'll get a device that's better than the R4 is right now. I'm looking forward to 100% Download Play compatibly!!!

Btw, I just tried iq_132's patch program. It worked to patch the R4 Library (I could run it on the M3 Simply) but I had some problems with the Chinese M3 Simply firmware. It didn't recognize it. Not that I was going to use it, but just to note

Actually, I'm doubting clones. It still takes a fair amouint of work to create the PCB files, and everything else needed for clones. Further, part of the code (The code that initializes the SD card and loads the "firmware" file) is still unknown, being burned directly into the device.

What the decrypted "firmware" does tell us includes some interesting things.
Rudolph used it to determine the code to soft-reset the R4DS, which he then used in "3in1 Expansion Pack Tool".
It could also tell us about the types of dynamic patching the R4DS does, etc.

you've got a point there. other cards are much easier to clone.

Argh!

I've used r4crypt to make the DSChannels (basically a fancy homebrew selector) become the first thing that starts when you turn on the DS.

Obviously this leaves the rather large issue of how to start the R4 Loader afterward. I tried decrypting the _DS_MENU.DAT, then renaming it to 'r4loader.nds' and placing it in the 'APPS' folder. However, when I try and launch it from DSChannels, I just get a bit of messed up graphics on the top screen and nothin' else.

Anyone have any ideas?

sorry, a noob at this (but i think/hope i'll learn easily), I managed to get some parts to focus at certain times, but it seems that:

1. there is extraneous stuff (a lot of it) at the top and bottom of the image...is that stuff that's focusable? or is it just...there?
2. the image is looped strangely, it doesnt show the full image and loops back. phrased better: an icon will show about the right-10% of its image, and then show the corresponding 90% of the left. nvm figured this out. for the other noobs like me, use the + and divide buttons to screw with the loop
3. it seems that only certain parts can be focused at a time...is there a way around that?
4. once you select a specific part (such as the soft reset options) how do you export that? how do you import what you want to replace it with?

It doesn´t work when patching the English R4 1.09 firmware for use with M3 Simply though

If you can fix that, I would be really grateful!

It´s great that you can patch all other versions though

As you got them all to work, maybe you can get 1.09 to work too

Edit: I forgot to mention that it actually boots, but it can't launch any game backup, homebrew or even moonshell!

When I convert R4 1.09 to M3 and then have cheats enabled, every game I have tried freezes when I press L R and select.
