The hardware internals need to be changed for it to work with the DSi so no, no fix will come along for the R4 to make it work with it.

R4 will not work with dsi but recently they introduced r4i which works with dsi pretty cool and it supports up to 32 GB. R4 does not support dsi but it plays American games.
