Hacking R4 uber noob

I got the R4 today. I got the kernel on the SD...but I can't get the game to work. I unzipped the rar file...dragged the folder onto the TF card...it shows up on the DS...but no game.

Help me.

Extract the .nds file to any location on your memory card (I suggest putting it on the root of the card, as it is quicker to find & select, obviously)

I figured it out shortly after I posted.

"Root" is basically the card itself right? I mean no folders at all.

Correct.

Assuming I'm correct, inside the folder of the ROM, should be a .zip or .rar file. Open it up with WinRAR, and extract the ROM onto the desktop of your computer. Then transfer it to your MicroSD.

One more question.

I deleted a couple of the zipped files and I didn't see them sow up in the recycle bin...where does it delete too? Just curious.

It doesn't really "delete." It just waits to be overwritten by another file.

the recycle bin does not activate/work with external storage devices (ipod, sd, ...)

only local hard discs

On topic: Since you have a small Micro SD card, use a ROM trimmer so that you can have some more room. Use NDSTokyoTrim.

Got my Kingston SD today. It turns out to be the Japan one.

So the one Newegg sells in the Japanese version. The price was good too. It came out to just under 20 shipped for a 2gb one. I'm suposed to get a 3 dollar rebate in the mail too. Good thing I waited to get it. The 1gb card was 18.99 from the place I got the R4 from.

Actually...it says "assembled in Japan" on the back of the package, but has "Japan" stamped on the SD itself.

I still suggest you trim your ROMS. If you like to cram as much as possible onto your R4, then ROM trimming is really useful.

I tried the trimmer. A couple it only trimmed from 64 to 63. One trimmed from 64 to 47.

I only have a few anyways.

How the heck do I install UMK? I've un-rar'd the files, but theres a whole bunch of them. unzipped all of them...but still can't drag them out of the winrar window.

Find the .nds file and transfer it to your mircoSD card. When you extract files it extracts them to a user-specified location so I don't know where your files were transferred to... The files in WinRAR are still compressed, they're not the extracted files.

Thats how I did most of the downloads...but on UMK...its had multiple ones.

All the other files had only one .nds file...but UMK has 8 or 9 of them.

Do you mean files like .r00? Extract them from the .zip file and then extract the .r00 file. They should merge together into 1 extracted .nds file.

I got it to work. I missed a step I guess.

On the other files, I was able to unzip then drag out...but on the UMK I dragged the entire unzipped folder out...opened it then unzipped. I picked the first file, unzipped...then dragged onto my desktop.

btw...the R4 seems to have cut my battery life by quite a bit. Is that normal?

Yes, most flashcarts really wear out the battery.
