It would make the skip where you go around the cloaked guy demanding the Garo mask faster since you have to save at the quill statue by him without actually getting up there then reload that save to actually be up there.

It's just a way to make people less save scummy, even though it's obviously still very easy to press home, quit, launch the game over.
