Hello there. I been out of the hacking/gaming scene fora long, long time but I recently purchased a gateway. Since I heard it was the best one to play 3DS Games and I had a 3DS XL with firmware lower than 9.x
I thought why not give it a try. Although I ran into a few issues. I tried playing a few games and it seems some like Pokemon, Smash bros and a few others won't play. After searching around I read that you need to update the emunand to a firmware above 9.x now my questions is if I do. Do I lose access to be able to boot into Gateway and how can I if the latest firmware is 9.6 I know Gateway doesn't function on the latest version so what can I do?

My 3DS XL version is on 6.2.0 U and I'm running 3.1.1 Gateway Ultra

Hi guys. This is my first post on gbatemp so sorry if I posted in the wrong section. I have the same problem as Daslim and I was wondering if instead of using the 3dnus could I simply update to the desired emunand using a ROM or even a retail cart? I know it's probably a noob question but I want to play Xenoblade and it requires fw9.4 and I'm currently on 9.0. Thanks

Does xenoblade come with the 9.4 update?

If so, you should be able to update emunand with the retailcard.

Okay I downloaded the system update although it's a lot of .cia files.
Am I supposed to install all of them one at a time?
I'm also going to use Big Blue Menu to install .cia files while in emunand mode.

You should install this CIA, then put the CIAs 3DSNUS gave you into an 'updates' folder at the root of your SD card.
Then go into emuNAND, launch the previously installed CIA and it will install the update automatically.

I have the Xenoblade rom. If I run the ROM using Sky3ds it should behave like a retail cart and update the emunand to 9.4 but how do I actually update the emunand using a retail cart? Is it as simple as booting in classic mode and selecting the Xenoblade game and saying yes to the update?

Sorry I'm getting to you back late but I been pretty busy with a couple of things.
Anyways everything seems to have worked out for the best.
My 3DS system is still 6.x and my emunand updated to 9x
The only problem I seem to be having is going online. It says there's a update for this game.
I'm guessing I can't update it without getting to the e-shop?

You can install the updates as cia files which can be obtained on illegal rom sites.

Okay I installed the updates without any problem.
The only thing is I can't seem to be able to play online.
I haven't tried any other game but with Smash I get this error.
Error Code: 002-0123

You cannot use online service with this Game Card.

I'm pretty sure this game is Online Patched so is several others.

That error is two different errors:
  • You didn't inject a private header into your rom
  • Your banned from online play
Also did you make sure to rename it from .3ds to .3dz?

Private header? I thought it just needed to be online patched?

EDIT: I actually didn't rename it. Let me do that right now.

load the rom up in gateway rom patcher and see if there's anything where the red arrow is

I renamed it from .3ds to .3dz and that seem to have worked.
Weird how such a small thing can make a big difference.
You been a great help Adeka as well as the others who tried to help me out here. Thank you again! ^^

I recommend you inject the rom with a private header so you don't get banned

Ah I see. Well I tried loading it up on the Gateway Rom Patcher but I get a error saying

This chip ID seems not adapted to your ROM size.
Can I suggest a better value?

Also the Cart ID is 11ED04AB678189581ADC60E33076B9C0

That error in gateway rom patcher is normal. Just click ok.

The exact numbers in the Cart ID spot doesn't really matter but you should put your own private one there or you will get banned.

Take one of your own games and put it in your 3ds. Go to the gateway menu and backup your cartridge. Take the newly created rom (it will be on the sd card inside the 3ds) and load it in gateway rom patcher. Click Export header. Load the rom that you downloaded in gateway rom patcher. click import header.

So it doesn't have to be the same game? Just any 3DS game will do?
Also do I have to do this with every .3dz rom I want to go online with or is this a special case?
