I've been into the DSi scene since ugopwn was discovered. I originally followed the now defunct dsiguide.me, which recommended (at the time) to downgrade to v1.4 with FwTool. Looking back, I don't remember why I did that, especially considering how dangerous that is.

Anyways, what exactly is it that makes flashing your NAND so dangerous? I've gone so long not knowing, but I had assumed that the DSi NAND is simply of poor quality.

That's exactly why it's dangerous.
If you bought a used DSi, then the NAND is likely used up plenty of times.
