So, Ive got a Ye Old Fatass PS2 and a memory card with Free McBoot installed. The only blank DVDs I have around the house are some Verbatim DVD+R DL. Will these work for backups? Im new to PS2 stuff and I just remember the PS1 was pretty picky about the disc format. Just wanna know before I waste a DVD

Personally had issues with dvd+r disc myself, using dvd-r disc works fine for me. Since you have a fat ps2 though you might as well get a ps2 network adapter and a ide hard drive to install in your ps2 to play ps2 games from it instead and use actual disc for ps1 games.

Those dvd+r dl disc might help with games that are too large to fit on normal disc like god of war and gutiar hero world tour.

I always used -R, never +R. Not saying it won't work, just I know -R will. The one game I played as a back up that was too big for single layer, I downloaded a ISO that compressed movies more or something to make it fit. At the time my PS2's laser was going bad and wouldn't read legit DL discs (like the one I actually had for this particular game), but the modded single layer version worked fine, so that's another option for at least some of the big games.

You probably already know this, but you have to convert the ISO files, with the ESR GUI tool, before burning them to DVD.

Yeah, I got that much down at least. I also see that theres an ESR app on the FreeMcBoot menu too, is that what I have to choose to run the games or does that do something else?

If it's a fat ps2 might I suggest just using the HDD+OPL? It's got much better support than than say USB and you'd save money on buying disks/coasters.

Well, just from a quick browsing of ebay, a 40gb HDD is like $40. A 50 pack of 5gb DVDs is like $15. I could see it being a decent option if the laser ever shits out which will probably happen eventually but untill then I'll have to pass. Plus I don't even have the required Network Adaptor so theres another added cost.

A compatible IDE is about $10. Let me pull something up.

Just scroll down. I had a friend who bought one listed here:

While I myself use a 40GB I scrapped from my FFXI days I've tested the one he bought and it works.

I can totally see where you're coming from though. My motivation was that I hate burning disks and my PS2's drive is almost done for.

Yep, those are some that i use from time to time between those, hp and sony brand. If your ps2 laser does die out on you you can buy a replacement laser for your fat ps2.

Also to your previous post you can get 128/250GB maxtor IDE harddrive on amazon for about $20 - $25 dollars That is assuming you have a ps2 network adapter in advance.

I'm guessing that will launch an ESR format DVD inserted after the system has started. Normally FreeMcBoot will boot directly into an ESR DVD when the PS2 is powered on.

That's odd. Is it esr patched? Also what model is your fat ps2?

It is ESR patched. Trying to play Tekken 5 if that matters. PS2 is SPCH-39001

Do you have any other dvd-r disc besides the verbatim to test out?

I tried out one of the Dual Layers I mentioned earlier and it didnt even detect it. Maybe I should use a different burn program or burn speed?

Hmm, Sounds like the laser in your might need a pot tweak to read your burned games. Do you need a tutorial on how to do it? Either that are if you are willing to wait and buy a different brand of dvd-r to see if that helps in your case. Odd that it wouldn't read the disc though.

Well then, didn't think that would work. If you don't mind keeping your ps2 in that position then all should be good.

If you dont mind helping with one last problem. I cant seem to get CD based games like Chulip and ICO to work. I know you have to convert them to ISO and I followed a guide to do it but after I ESR patch it and burn it they dont work at all. If you could give me some proper instructions on converting .BIN and .Cue that would awesome
